Srinagar, Oct 1: Over 4,000 people involved in the drug trade have been arrested in Jammu and Kashmir as part of the 'Nasha Mukt Abhiyan' launched in April this year, Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat said on Thursday.
Addressing the participants of 'Run for Unity' here, Prabhat said police have registered 3,257 cases under the NDPS Act since April 11 when Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha launched the campaign from Jammu.
"Around 4,000 individuals have been arrested and 170 convictions have been secured," Prabhat said, adding that more than 2,500 cases have already been disposed off.
He said in terms of property attachments, Jammu and Kashmir currently ranks number one across India, with 288 properties attached. "The value of the attached properties is to the tune of Rs 138 crore while Rs 80 lakh cash were also seized".
The DGP said 144 accused persons have been booked under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act (IT-NDPS), the highest number in any state or union territory of the country.
"Police continuously works to foil the nefarious designs of our hostile neighbour through counter-terror operations. In an attempt to foil the plans of the impure neighbour, the counter-terrorist operations that we run, in your guidance, September has been a month of joy for us, and a month of many operational achievements," he said.
September witnessed the killing of two top Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba commanders, Hashim Musa alias Asif Fauji and Yair, in separate encounters in the forest areas of Budgam.
The two were members of a four-member LeT commanders group that security agencies have linked to some of the major militant attacks in Jammu and Kashmir in recent years.
DGP also highlighted the police's achievements in crime prevention and detection, maintenance of law and order and security arrangements for the annual Amarnath Yatra.
Turning to the police's youth outreach initiatives, he said the increasing participation of young people in the Kashmir Marathon reflected their commitment to a peaceful future.
"The youth of Kashmir and the residents of the whole of J&K are investing in peace over violence, progress over destruction," Prabhat said, adding that the Union Territory had "risen from darkness to light."
J&K Police chief said the growing participation of children and youth in such events every year reflects their commitment to a peaceful and prosperous future, while sending a powerful message that attempts by a hostile neighbour to disrupt peace in Jammu and Kashmir are failing.
DGP said J&K Police was using its civic action programme and sporting activities to channelise the energy of young people towards constructive pursuits.
