Pahalgam Tragedy Shattered Tourism Hopes

April 28, 2025 | Dr Feroz Ahmad Dar

The serene valley of Pahalgam, often referred to as the crown jewel of Kashmir’s tourism, was recently rocked by a tragic attack that sent shockwaves across the region. This violent incident has not only claimed innocent lives but also dealt a serious blow to the fragile tourism industry that was slowly recovering after years of instability.
The attack, which targeted tourists and locals alike, has reignited fears about safety in Kashmir, a place long known for its breathtaking beauty and warm hospitality. Just when hoteliers, tour operators, and local artisans had begun to see a surge in bookings and visitors, this senseless violence has pushed the valley back into uncertainty. Many travelers have already started canceling their trips, while several countries have issued fresh travel advisories warning their citizens against visiting Kashmir.
Tourism is the backbone of Kashmir’s economy, providing livelihoods to thousands of people from houseboat owners and pony wallahs to hotel workers and souvenir sellers. The loss of tourists means the loss of income for countless families who depend heavily on seasonal visitors. Summer, which is traditionally the peak tourist season in Kashmir, now faces the grim prospect of empty hotels, deserted gardens, and closed shops.
Local business owners express deep anguish. Locals were hopeful this year would be different, After COVID and years of unrest, tourists were finally coming back. Now, everything is shattered again...
Authorities have promised swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore a sense of security. Increased security measures are being implemented in tourist areas, and the government is urging people not to lose hope. However, rebuilding confidence among travelers will take time, patience, and persistent efforts.
The attack on Pahalgam is not just an attack on a town; it is an attack on the dreams of an entire community that longs for peace, prosperity, and a return to normalcy. The people of Kashmir remain resilient, but they desperately need stability to keep their centuries-old tradition of welcoming guests alive.
As the valley mourns yet another tragedy, the world watches with sympathy, hoping that Kashmir will rise again stronger, safer, and even more beautiful...
