Abu Huraira reported: The messenger of Allah(PBUH) said:" When a man leaves this world, his deeds come to an end except three, continuous act of charity ,knowledge that benefits others & a virtuous child who prays for him(Muslim). The last part of the hadith clearly underscores ,having a virtuous child is surely a blessing for parents not only in this world but also in the hereafter. Undoubtedly those Parents are fortuitous who receive benefits through the prayer of their virtuous children even after their death. This is truly the ultimate plum one can have.
Every parent must dream of having a virtuous child. But this is possible only when parents will take full responsibility to upbring their children through inculcation of good manners in them & directing them towards submission of Allah. The morality or immorality of an individual depends relatively on the upbringing he receives and this obligation bedrocks fully on the shoulders of the parents. Literally, parents are the strongest instruments of carving an individual, moral or immoral, good or bad from the child.
The Prophet of Islam (PBUH) said;" The best thing a father can give his child is good manners & moralistic build up.The parents who upbring their children truthfully ,reap the harvest of their favours during their lifetime even hereafter as mentioned in the beginning. Not only the parents are benefited from such children but also the society at large. But providing good upbringing (Like Good manners, moral sufficiency etc) of a child is not any downhill and jejune task that the parents can perform with ease or effortlessly. This task requires, in fact, exquisite conduct and mettle. In order to make certain that a child carries moral character and lives up to their parent’s anticipations, parents must take an active role in shaping their child's personality according to the following Islamic guidelines.
Firstly, attribute a good name to your child in consultation with the people of erudition making sure the name has a good meaning reflecting good qualities & utterance. According to the Prophet(PBUH),"On the day of judgement you will be called by your names & by your father's name, so give yourselves good names"(Abu Dawood). In the context of this hadith a famous scholar, Imam al-Nawawi adds that, "A good name is a form of dua for the child's ethical character". Names with abhorrent meanings are not encouraged in Islam. Ibn Umar (RA) and others narrated the Prophet (SAW) said,“ And undoubtedly, the distasteful names are Harb (war) and Murrah (bitter)”[Recorded by Muslim, ibn Majah & others].So naming a child is an important duty of Parents in Islam ,a good name has a considerable influence on child's existence & veneration. As recorded by Bukhari(6190) from Ibn al-Musayyab that his father came to the Prophet(PBUH) who asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “Hazn (meaning rough).”Prophet (PBUH) said to him, “You are Sahl (meaning easy). He replied back, “I will not change the name that my father gave to me.” Ibn al-Musayyab said, ” we have had roughness ever since.”
Secondly, Parents must provide a proper education to their children. They should consider inculcating religious education into their children, Introducing them to salah(prayer),the Quran, hadith & Fiqah. The Quran comments," And instruct your progeny to practice salah & adhere to it yourself"(20:132). Besides, parents are also responsible for providing worldly education to their children to confront the contemporary challenges and enable them to contribute effectively to society.
Thirdly, parents must carve moral & character traits of their children. They are ought to inculcate traits like speaking truth, offering 5 times prayer , decorum, simplicity ,honesty, patience, deference for others.
Fourthly & most importantly , parents have the responsibility of being a perfect example. A child's development is highly influenced by the surroundings in which they grow up .Good children are likely to be raised by good parents. Al Ghazali,a famous Islamic scholar is quoted as saying ,children learn through attention & emulation, hence parents must display high moral traits. He also stressed practical steps to inculcate rectitude in children viz storytelling about righteous people & involve kids in acts of worship & charity.
Conclusion
It is exigent for parents to know their role & engage actively to carve the child's individual development by sticking to these principles with this they can fulfil their responsibility fully .Children who acquire proper guidance & attention from their parents tend to develop responsible individuals, contribute positively to their society and above all proving to be a blessing for parents after their death. There is no concept then of the vices like drugs ,immodesty, fornication among the youth which have engulfed us today.
