
Guwahati, June 22: Security agencies intercepted a major consignment of poppy seeds weighing 8,764 kilograms and valued at approximately ₹1.31 crore during an operation along the Silchar Bypass Road in Cachar district of Assam.
Officials said the seizure was made during a targeted operation based on specific inputs regarding the transportation of the consignment through the area. During the operation, authorities stopped and searched a vehicle suspected of carrying the goods.
Upon inspection, security personnel recovered 8,764 kg of poppy seeds concealed in the vehicle. The consignment, estimated to be worth around ₹1.31 crore, was subsequently seized.
Two individuals allegedly involved in transporting the consignment were apprehended on the spot. The vehicle used for carrying the material was also taken into custody.
Officials said preliminary investigations are underway to ascertain the source and intended destination of the consignment and to determine whether a larger network is involved in the transportation and distribution of the seized material.
The arrested individuals have been handed over to the concerned authorities for further legal proceedings. Security agencies stated that efforts are continuing to identify other persons linked to the case.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to preventing illegal trafficking and ensuring strict enforcement of the law across the region.
