The Rawalpora–Rangreth road, a crucial arterial link in Srinagar city, has fallen into a state of disrepair, causing daily hardship for commuters due to large potholes and uneven surfaces. The deteriorating condition of this vital stretch has sparked outrage among local residents, who accuse the administration of turning a blind eye to their repeated pleas for repair and maintenance.
The road, which connects several important residential and industrial areas, has become increasingly dangerous, particularly during rains, when potholes fill with water, making them difficult to detect. As a result, traffic congestion, vehicle damage, and frequent near-mishaps have become common along this route.
“This road is a nightmare, especially during peak hours. There are potholes every few meters, and it’s only getting worse,” said Aijaz Ahmad, a regular commuter who travels to Rangreth daily for work. “Despite raising the issue multiple times, there’s been no response from the authorities. It seems our safety and comfort are not a priority.”
Local shopkeepers and business owners echoed similar concerns, pointing out that the road’s condition is also affecting commercial activities in the area. “Delivery trucks avoid this route due to the poor condition. It’s impacting our livelihood,” said Imran Sheikh, who runs a hardware store in the vicinity.
Residents allege that while temporary patchwork has occasionally been carried out, no comprehensive repair or resurfacing has been undertaken in years. They believe the problem stems from administrative apathy and a lack of coordination among departments responsible for road maintenance.
“Potholes are not just a nuisance—they’re a danger. School buses, ambulances, and two-wheelers are particularly at risk. We urge the Roads and Buildings Department and Srinagar Municipal Corporation to take immediate action before a serious accident occurs,” said Farah Jan, a resident of Rawalpora.
Social media has also seen growing frustration, with netizens sharing photos and videos of the battered road and tagging officials in hopes of drawing attention to the issue.
So far, no official response has been issued by the Roads and Buildings Department regarding the matter.
The affected public is now calling on the Lieutenant Governor’s administration to intervene directly and ensure that the Rawalpora–Rangreth road is repaired without further delay.
