Srinagar, Aug 27: Frequent and prolonged power outages have left residents of Nowgam frustrated, with consumers complaining that erratic electricity supply has disrupted normal life and added to their difficulties during the ongoing spell of warm weather.
Residents said unscheduled power cuts have become a recurring problem in several areas of Nowgam, with electricity remaining unavailable for long stretches without adequate prior information from the concerned authorities.
The interruptions have affected households, students, shopkeepers and small businesses, many of whom depend on uninterrupted power supply for essential daily activities. Residents said repeated outages are particularly troublesome during evening hours, when families return home and electricity demand increases.
“People are unable to understand why power supply is being snapped repeatedly despite paying their bills regularly. We need a reliable supply and, at the very least, timely information about scheduled shutdowns,” a resident said.
Shopkeepers also expressed concern over the impact of frequent outages on business activity, saying interruptions affect lighting, electronic equipment and other essential operations. Students preparing for examinations have likewise complained that power cuts make it difficult to study, particularly after sunset.
Residents alleged that prolonged outages are often accompanied by uncertainty over restoration, forcing people to depend on alternative arrangements. They urged the authorities to strengthen the local distribution network and address technical faults responsible for repeated disruptions.
The residents have appealed to the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) and other concerned agencies to conduct an inspection of the affected areas, identify weak points in the distribution system and ensure timely maintenance of transformers, feeders and other infrastructure.
They also called for a clear and transparent schedule for planned shutdowns so that consumers can make necessary arrangements.
With electricity being an essential service, residents said uninterrupted and dependable power supply should be treated as a priority, particularly in densely populated areas.
They urged the authorities to take immediate corrective measures and ensure that Nowgam residents are not subjected to repeated and unexplained power cuts.
