
Veteran Physicist vows to address faculty grievances, uphold institutional integrity
Prof. M A Shah, Former Head, Department of Physics,
was elected as President of the Teachers' Society at NIT Srinagar, securing a decisive victory. According to the preferential voting system, Prof. M A Shah received 398 points, while the other contender secured 257 points. Encouraged and supported by young faculty, Prof Shah is expected to play a vital role in redresal of grievances including pending promotions of the young faculty and decades old issues of the institution. Law abiding, Liberal and upright; Prof Shah has been in good books of his top men, for being loyal and disciplined.
Acknowledging and admiring the visionary and pragmatic approach of predecessors/Former Faculty for establishing Teachers' Society at Regional Engineering College Srinagar way back in 1986. The constitution was drafted by Prof O N Kaul, covering every aspect including the aims and objectives of the society.
The document is equally self-explanatory and unproblematic ad is in line with the established law. The constitution is recognized and approved by the Board of Governors (BOG) vide Board Order No 14/1986, dated 2 nd December 1986. It mainly focuses on the welfare of both teachers and students. Elections were conducted on October 14, 2024, in line with the society's bylaws. Prof Shah, treats the constitution as bible and made his stand clear that there is no scope to work outside the contours of the
constitution. Within the ambit of the constitution, a team of 12 members, representing all departments shall be elected as executive members of the society.
Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Ravinder Nath, congratulated and invited Prof. Shah and his team in the institute Committee Room, expressing confidence that under Shah’s leadership, the society would address key issues benefiting both the institution and its stakeholders. Prof. Shah and his team held a detailed discussion on various concerns of the institute during a meeting. The meeting which lasted for one hour was attended by Deans, senior and young Faculty. The team also thanked and acknowledged Prof Ravinder Nath for his services to the institute and assured to remain obedient. Non-Teaching President Mr. Bashir Ahmad Sheikh also joined the gathering, as a special invitee for a tea party hosted by the Director.
Prof. Shah, who began his career on September 11, 1999, as a lecturer at the erstwhile Regional Engineering College (now NIT Srinagar), has worked tirelessly over the past 25 years to make meaningful contributions to society, especially in the Kashmir Valley.
During 25 years of scientific career within India and outside, he has published as many as 150 SCI research articles, covering the contemporary developments of Nanotechnology and Nanoscience. In addition, he has authored two text books on Nanoscience with reputed publishers, edited three books on different aspects of Nanotechnology and number of articles on current issues including on New Education Policy 2020.
Dr. Shah has also given a soft approach for fabrication of Nanomaterials and the versatile technique “Safe way to Nanotechnology” for the synthesis of Metal oxide/hydroxide nanomaterials, which has evoked good response though still in progress and practice.
Dr. Shah had a honour to work with prominent scientists both within and outside country and was honoured on many occasions for his dedicated work. He has been awarded a mega project (Rs 170 Lakhs) by the Ministry of Science & Technology, New Delhi for developing Nanotechnology Laboratory (LMN) at NIT Srinagar, besides receiving Rs. 100.00 Lakhs for commissioning Scanning Electron Microscope. Prof Shah is a member of many science academies, including American Physical Society, Royal Society of Chemistry and Materials Research Society of India. His work has been cited by number of scientific reporters as well as scientific media across the country and middle east. Dr. Shah is teaching Nanotechnology, Materials Science and Materials Characterization from the last two decades and is actively engaged as reviewer /editor of many scientific journals and magazines.
Prof. Shah has distinction and is credited of having launched Masters in Physics at NIT Srinagar, making it a post graduate department, after 60 years of its establishment. In collaboration with different IITs, Shah is organising the series of International Conferences on “Nanotechnology for Better Living NBL&t; provide platform and to handover this new technology to younger generation. Organized 10 INSPIRE Internship programme (P.Ms Initiative) for the bright students of the valley, which aims to attract talent for study of science at an early age. Thousands of young brains were benefited so far. Dr. Shah has honour to be the brain behind this initiative,
for the first time in the history of NIT Srinagar. Recently, declared as top 2% scientist by Stanford, Shah has been in news for his accomplishments.
Shah is bestowed with many good qualities including a good speaker and
an excellent writer, besides has many more honours, accolades and awards to narrate his profile. Prof. Shah, known for his humility and simplicity, won with a significant margin and enjoys wide popularity among students and young faculty alike.
