Prof. Naheed Akhtar: A Voice of Grace in Academia

August 19, 2025 | Dr. Aasif Ahmad

It is not mandatory for a person to become an author or a writer by heredity. Many people, while pursuing their professional careers in government or private sectors, dedicate their spare time to writing and continue their literary dreams. Among them are individuals who deserve to be celebrated for balancing both responsibilities with grace.

One such inspiring figure is Prof. Naheed Akhtar, a poetess and teacher whose work in literature is truly worth honouring. A committed academician in the Department of Higher Education, she serves as an Assistant Professor of English at Bharat Institute of Engineering and Technology, Ibrahimpatnam, Hyderabad. With over a decade of teaching experience, she has carved out a remarkable career as both an educator and a creative writer.
Despite her busy academic schedule, Prof. Naheed Akhtar nurtured her passion for writing. Her journey as a poet began in 2018, when her short poetic quotes shared on Facebook received immense appreciation. The constant encouragement from readers, who admired her expressions, inspired her to give her words a proper shape. Since then, she has dedicated herself to writing poetry with sincerity and passion.
Her creative work reflects the realities of contemporary life, and her themes resonate with the concerns of modern society. With keen observation, she addresses subjects such as drug abuse, divorce, rape, domestic violence, love, and patriotism—themes that connect deeply with readers. She has so far authored multiple poetry collections, published both nationally and internationally.
Her published works include:
Phantasms of My Heart – A heartfelt collection that explores the depth of emotions, inner conflicts, and human longings, giving readers a glimpse into the unseen corners of the heart.
Earth’s Love – A tribute to nature and humanity’s bond with it, where themes of compassion, healing, and environmental consciousness emerge vividly.
The Morphine – A hard-hitting poetic portrayal of social evils like drug abuse, violence, and the silent suffering that often goes unnoticed in society.
Beyond the Clouds – A collection filled with hope, resilience, and the search for light in times of despair, encouraging readers to rise above struggles.
Let the Womb Hold – A bold and sensitive work highlighting issues of womanhood, motherhood, and the challenges women face in a patriarchal society.
Each collection carries a unique vision, portraying her sensitivity to social issues while also capturing the essence of human emotions. Besides poetry, she has also ventured into short fiction. Her short story, The Wife Speaks, has earned recognition for its depth and narrative style.
As a teacher, Prof. Naheed Akhtar inspires her students not only through literature but also by encouraging them to develop their own creative skills. She emphasizes postmodern trends in literature and ensures that her teaching is aligned with contemporary academic and literary discourses. This combination of scholarship and creativity makes her a true role model in higher education.
Outside her professional life, she enjoys simple hobbies like cooking, reading, writing, and listening to old songs and ghazals. Her admiration for the legendary ghazal singer Jagjit Singh reflects her refined taste and love for soulful music.
Prof. Naheed Akhtar’s dual identity as an educator and poetess adds immense value to the academic and literary world. Her success proves that one need not inherit writing—it can be achieved with dedication, passion, and perseverance. Teachers like her, who inspire students while contributing to literature, deserve the highest honour.
