
Srinagar, May 4: Light to moderate rainfall was recorded in plains across Kashmir on Monday while few upper reaches received light snow bringing a dip in day temperatures.
A MeT official said Srinagar received 11.2 mm of rainfall between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm while tourist resorts of Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded 10.4 mm and 10.2 mm respectively during the same period.
Kupwara in north Kashmir saw 4.4 mm of precipitation, while Kokernag and Qazigund in south Kashmir recorded 2.2 mm each.
The rainfall led to below-normal maximum temperatures across the Valley.
Srinagar recorded a maximum of 20.5°C, which is 2.2°C below normal.
Similarly, Qazigund and Kupwara reported maximum temperatures of 19.6°C and 20.8°C, around 2°C to 3°C below seasonal averages.
Pahalgam recorded maximum temperature of 16.8°C, while Gulmarg registered a much cooler maximum of 11.0°C on the day. The temperature at both the tourist resorts witnessed departures of nearly 3°C below normal.
Some upper reaches including Peer Ki Gali received fresh snowfall today.
“Following fresh snowfall in upper reaches, Mughal road has been temporarily closed for precautionary measures via Peer Ki Gali,” an official said.
People have been advised to avoid travelling on Mughal Road until the road becomes passable.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has predicted intermittent light rain and thundershowers across Jammu and Kashmir over the coming days, with generally dry conditions dominating much of the week.
According to the forecast, a brief spell of light rain or thundershowers is expected at scattered places on May 5, mainly during the afternoon hours. From May 6 to 9, weather conditions are likely to remain largely dry, although brief showers at isolated locations during afternoon hours cannot be ruled out.
Between May 10 and 12, the department expects generally dry weather to continue, with occasional light rain or thundershowers at scattered places.
