Ramban youth found dead after 20-day search

May 03, 2026 | BK News Service

Srinagar, May 2: A 22-year-old youth from Ramban, who went missing nearly 20 days ago after allegedly being chased by suspected cow vigilantes, was found dead on Saturday, officials said.

The body of Tanveer Ahmad Chopan, son of Abdul Salam Chopan of Mundkhal Pogal, was recovered from Nallah Bishlari near Kraalna Digdool in Ramban district after an extensive search operation.
Officials said the youth had gone missing on April 12 near Makarkoot along the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway while travelling from Jammu to his native village. He was allegedly intercepted and assaulted by a group of individuals, following which he jumped into a stream and remained untraceable.
“Today, the body was retrieved from the stream in a decomposed condition and shifted to hospital for medico-legal formalities,” an official said.
Following the incident, police registered FIR No. 26/2026 at Ramsoo Police Station and arrested four persons identified as Surjeet Singh, Sandeep Singh, Digvijay Singh and Keval Singh.
SSP Ramban Arun Gupta has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by SDPO Banihal Surinder Singh Biloria, to investigate the case.
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased has alleged that harassment and chasing by the accused led to his death and has demanded a fair and thorough investigation along with strict action against those involved.
