Remote women need greater breast health awareness: Dr. Ajaz Rather

July 15, 2026 | Shugufta Rashid

Srinagar, July 14: Stressing the importance of early detection in reducing breast cancer-related deaths, Head of the Department of Surgery, SKIMS Medical College Hospital, Bemina, Dr. Ajaz Ahmad Rather has called for expanding breast health awareness programmes, particularly in the remote and underserved areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking during a breast health awareness programme, Dr. Rather said that lack of awareness, social stigma and delayed medical consultation remain major challenges in the early diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases, especially among women living in rural and far-flung regions.
He emphasized that timely screening, regular self-breast examination and prompt medical advice can significantly improve treatment outcomes and save lives. "Women should never ignore warning signs such as breast lumps, persistent pain, nipple discharge or changes in the shape or skin of the breast. Early detection remains the most effective weapon against breast cancer," he said.
Dr. Rather stressed the need to intensify community-based awareness campaigns through healthcare institutions, primary health centres and outreach programmes so that women in remote areas receive accurate information about breast health and available medical services.
He also highlighted the importance of breaking social taboos surrounding breast diseases and encouraging women to seek timely medical consultation without hesitation.
The programme also focused on educating participants about breast cancer risk factors, preventive measures, the importance of routine clinical examinations and the availability of advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities at SKIMS Medical College Hospital, Bemina.
Health experts attending the programme reiterated that sustained awareness campaigns and improved access to screening services are essential for reducing the burden of breast cancer and ensuring better health outcomes for women across Jammu and Kashmir.
