In a major step towards promoting earth sciences and climate resilience in the region, the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Kashmir (KU), hosted a special lecture by Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India (GOI), during which he officially announced the establishment of a Student Chapter of the Indian Geophysical Union (IGU) at the University.

In his lecture titled "Earth System Science: Vision 2047", Dr. Ravichandran highlighted the urgent need to transition from conventional weather forecasting to a more proactive model of "weather management", envisioning a future where India is both "weather ready" and "climate smart" by 2047.

Dr. Ravichandran provided deep insights into India’s scientific roadmap for the coming decades. He stressed the importance of integrated earth system science approaches in combating the effects of climate change, and emphasized the critical role that academic institutions and youth must play in shaping the country’s scientific future.

The establishment of the IGU Student Chapter at the Department of Earth Sciences KU, he said, would create a platform for young scientists to engage with frontier research, connect with national and international experts, and contribute meaningfully to India's Earth science mission.

In her remarks, Vice Chancellor, KU Prof. Nilofer Khan, while reflecting on the theme of the lecture, underlined the importance of engaging and sensitizing the student community right from the school level about the impacts of climate change and other pressing ecological issues.

“Meaningful collaborations like this can benefit society in mitigating the effects of climate change and enhancing disaster management capabilities—especially when we involve students, women, and other stakeholders in such initiatives,” she said.

While referring to the establishment of IGU`s Student Chapter at varsity`s Department of Earth Sciences  the Vice Chancellor welcomed the initiative and appreciated the MoES, GOI for its continued support in fostering scientific temper among students.

Speaking on the occasion Dean Research KU Prof. Mohammad Sultan Bhat provided a comprehensive overview of the University’s academic and research milestones and emphasized the importance of continued support from MoES to further strengthen ongoing and upcoming research projects, particularly those under the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, which are addressing critical environmental challenges.

Dr. Abhay Bansal, Secretary IGU, spoke about the wide array of scientific activities, outreach programs, and training workshops being organized by IGU across India while Dr. Jagbir Singh from MoES, GOI introduced the guest speaker, setting the context for the lecture.

Earlier Prof. Bikram Singh Bali, convener of the event delivered the welcome address, highlighting the objectives behind organizing the event and the significance of launching the IGU Student Chapter at the University.

The event was attended by faculty members, researchers, and students from various disciplines engaging in thought-provoking discussions with Dr. Ravichandran on the future of Earth science research.
