Restoring Family Bonds in Kashmir

March 06, 2025 | Leyakat Ali Khan

Introduction

Allah has created every being with a specific purpose, and among all creatures, humans hold a special status in His sight. The Quran emphasizes that humans were created to worship Allah. Within humanity, Allah has categorized individuals according to His divine wisdom. Prophets and Messengers hold the highest rank, with Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) as the leader of all Prophets. Following them are the Companions (Sahabah), the Tabi’un, the Tabi’ Tabi’un, and the Awliya-i-Kiram. These ranks serve as guiding lights for Muslims, demonstrating the path of righteousness and moral integrity.
The Role of Awliya in the Valley of Kashmir: In the Valley of Kashmir, Awliya-i-Kiram played a crucial role in spreading the message of Islam and guiding people towards righteousness. Figures like Ameer-i-Kabir Mir Sayid Ali Hamadani and Shaykh Hamza Makhdumi significantly contributed to the spiritual and moral upliftment of the people. Unfortunately, their legacy is often overlooked today, leading to a decline in the values they once upheld. Reviving their teachings is essential, but it must be done without falling into sectarianism, ensuring that their wisdom serves as a unifying force for the community.

Understanding the Crisis

The increasing disintegration of family bonds in the Valley of Kashmir is a major concern. Humans are created upon fitrah (natural disposition), and any imbalance between their physical and spiritual aspects leads to psychological distress. This distress, in turn, disrupts family structures, leading to conflicts and disharmony. While some youth remain devoted to their parents, there is an alarming rise in disobedience, with cases of children neglecting or abandoning their parents becoming more frequent. This issue requires serious reflection and collective action to restore familial harmony.

The Importance of Parental Rights in Islam

One of the fundamental reasons for youth disobedience is the lack of awareness regarding parental rights in Islam. Islamic teachings place great emphasis on the respect and obedience owed to parents. However, many parents fail to instill these values in their children due to negligence in incorporating religious teachings into their upbringing. When ethical and moral guidelines are ignored, children grow up with weak foundations, leading to a breakdown in family values. It is an obligation upon every Muslim to learn and teach the fundamental principles of Islam, ensuring that the sanctity of the parent-child relationship is preserved.

The Decline of Dawah and Its Impact on Society

A major contributor to the crisis of youth disobedience is the widespread negligence towards Dawah (Islamic outreach). Dawah plays a critical role in shaping a morally sound society, yet its importance has diminished over time. Many Muslims mistakenly believe that Dawah is meant only for non-Muslims, whereas it is equally essential for the revival of faith (Tajdeed al-Iman) within the Muslim community. During the time of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W), the Companions regularly gathered in Masjid al-Nabawi to renew their faith and strengthen their spiritual connection. The absence of such religious reinforcement today has led to moral stagnation, making it difficult to address social issues effectively.
