Kashmir is vastly different today compared to the circumstances of 1990. We now see peace and stability in the region, leading to progress in every sector. This transformation is largely due to the efforts of the army and other security forces. Since 1947, our army has been providing safety and security from external threats. Both the people of Kashmir and the army have endured immense losses. While we often discuss the suffering of civilians, we rarely acknowledge the sacrifices of the Indian Army. It is important to note that the army did not enter the valley forcibly but came at the request of the people of Kashmir and the ruler of the time when raiders invaded and terrorized the region with their actions.
For the Army, it was challenging to identify active militants when militancy was at its peak in Kashmir. The large number of militants led to widespread lawlessness and illegal activities. Additionally, Kashmir experienced mass killings and threats to life and property. The peace and stability of common people were shattered, making it difficult for the Army to curb militancy in the region.
Despite the relentless attempts by Kashmir’s adversaries to destabilize the region, we have stood united, resolutely rejecting all forms of terrorism. The efforts of the government and security agencies have been instrumental in curbing this sinister wave of terrorism, improving the lives of Kashmiris, and transforming Kashmir into a safer place to live. To further explore this progress, I will highlight key measures taken to curb terrorism and foster peaceful coexistence.

Government and Security Initiatives

Quoting my slogan, frequently used in drug de-addiction programs and applicable here as well: 'Punish One, Teach Everyone.' The government’s policies reflect this philosophy in their approach to narco-terrorism, striking at the root of this menace in Kashmir. For instance, just a few days ago on November 8th, authorities seized properties worth crores belonging to four Pakistan-based terrorist handlers in Handwara. On the same day, three drug peddlers were arrested in Srinagar. This is only one example among many where properties linked to narco-terrorism offenders have been attached, sending a strong message. Such actions instil a sense of fear among those who might be tempted by enemy traps or motivated by financial gain. By aggressively dismantling the narco-terrorism ecosystem, these efforts are significantly curbing this threat and fostering a climate of peace and stability. Efforts have been made to crack down on the financing of terrorism, including the seizure of properties and assets of individuals and organizations linked to terrorist activities, as I mentioned earlier. The Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) has been actively used to attach assets of militants and their sympathizers. Operation All-Out, which is a coordinated effort between the Indian Army, CRPF, and J&K Police, has successfully eliminated many militants over the past few years. The operation primarily focuses on targeting terrorists in the Kashmir Valley and has led to a significant reduction in militancy-related violence. These initiatives and policies have significantly reduced the terroristic activity in the valley hence providing common Kashmiris a peaceful environment. One of the key measures in curbing recruitment into militant groups has been the restriction on the return of militant bodies to their families for public funerals. In the past, these funerals often became glorified events, inadvertently acting as a ‘magnet’ that encouraged young people to join militant outfits. For the last four years, this practice has been curtailed, with no bodies returned to families, thereby reducing the allure of militant funerals as recruitment grounds. This approach has significantly decreased the number of youth drawn into militancy through exposure at such events, contributing to a safer, more stable environment in the Valley

Community Engagements

As a young Kashmiri who has closely witnessed the turmoil over the years and has often written about it, I’ve always emphasized that uprooting terrorism requires the active involvement of local communities. For a long time now, security forces have organized free medical camps, sports events, career counselling sessions, and vocational training courses—all aimed at preventing the radicalization of our youth. These initiatives have not only engaged Kashmiris in sports and vocational activities but have also shielded young minds from manipulation by Pakistan-based agencies. I’ve often noticed that the trophies and cash prizes awarded at these events by the security forces are substantial. This support not only encourages youth participation but also inspires them to pursue legitimate paths that allow them to contribute positively to their families and society.

Education and Economic Development

As someone who benefited from the educational initiatives of the Indian Army, I have personally experienced how impactful such support can be. I attended a renowned residential school run by the Indian Army, where the fees were around one lakh rupees—a cost my family could never have managed on its own. Thanks to the Army’s sponsorship, which covered my fees for four years, I was able to pursue my studies without adding to my father’s financial burden. There are countless examples of the Army providing similar financial assistance to students in need, enabling them to pursue their dreams. One notable initiative is the Army Goodwill Schools, where over 15,000 students are currently enrolled. These schools maintain minimal fees, making quality education accessible to many families in the region. Beyond supporting students, these schools also employ local, educated youth as teachers and staff, providing them with stable jobs that support their households. Initiatives like these not only save young people from radicalization but also help those who may have been influenced find a path back to communal harmony and peace.

Cybersecurity and Social Media Monitoring

In the era of social media, terrorist groups have increasingly turned to online platforms to spread radicalizing content and create tensions in the Valley. They often exploit religious sentiments to fuel discord. Just last winter, an incident at NIT Srinagar was twisted to serve this agenda. A boy involved in blasphemy against Prophet PBUH was swiftly apprehended by the J&K Police, but accounts with Kashmiri names on X—operated from Pakistan—tried to spin the incident in a way that could incite unrest. However, kudos to the youth and civil societies of Kashmir who united to reject this false propaganda, showing a commitment to peace. The Cyber Police remain vigilant, actively banning accounts on platforms like Facebook, X, and Instagram that attempt to radicalize Kashmiri youth while the operators live luxurious lives abroad. As part of its counterterrorism strategy, the government has ramped up efforts to monitor and regulate social media to prevent extremist propaganda and recruitment. This involves blocking harmful content and tracking online recruiters, thus safeguarding the youth and reinforcing stability in the Valley.
Through effective policies and strategic alignment with security agencies, the government has played a pivotal role in maintaining peace and stability in Kashmir. By staying one step ahead of those who threaten this progress, they have enabled Kashmiris to breathe the air of peace they have long yearned for. Under the governance of the LG administration, we have seen tangible progress, and there is a renewed hope that these efforts will continue to root out terrorism completely. Kashmir’s journey toward lasting peace is ongoing, and with sustained dedication, we can look forward to a future free from the shadows of conflict.
