Saffron growers in Pampore turn to mustard, other crops for lack of irrigation facilities

October 13, 2023 | BK News Service

Saffron growers in the picturesque region of Pampore, famous for its saffron cultivation, are being forced to diversify into alternative crops, such as mustard, due to the chronic shortage of irrigation facilities. The absence of a reliable water supply has led to the decline of saffron production, pushing farmers to explore new avenues of agriculture.
Pampore, often referred to as the "Saffron Bowl of Kashmir," is renowned for producing some of the world's finest saffron. However, in recent years, the region has grappled with significant water scarcity, adversely affecting saffron cultivation, which heavily depends on consistent irrigation.
Saffron growers in Pampore have lamented the challenges they face, citing insufficient access to water as a primary hurdle. A saffron farmer explained, "We have witnessed a continuous decline in saffron yields due to water shortages. Saffron requires precise irrigation, and without it, our livelihoods are at stake."
Many farmers have started shifting their focus to alternative crops like mustard, which require less water and are more resilient to the prevailing conditions. This diversification is seen as a pragmatic response to the changing climate and the limitations of saffron cultivation without adequate irrigation.
The lack of irrigation facilities has resulted in declining saffron yields and, in some cases, complete crop failures. Consequently, the economic stability of many farming families in Pampore has been severely impacted.
Local farmers and agricultural experts have been vocal about the urgent need for improved irrigation infrastructure in the region. They argue that investment in irrigation facilities is vital not only for safeguarding the traditional saffron industry but also for ensuring food security through diversified crop cultivation.
Authorities in Pampore have acknowledged the problem and have committed to exploring solutions to address the water scarcity issue. Proposals for the development of irrigation systems, including the renovation of existing canals and the construction of new ones, are being considered to enhance the region's agricultural resilience.
