Saifi calls for smooth Parliament proceedings

July 21, 2026 | BK News Service

New Delhi, July 20: World Peace Harmony Chairman Shakeel Saifi has appealed to all political parties, particularly the Opposition, to ensure the smooth functioning of Parliament, stressing that uninterrupted proceedings are vital for strengthening India's democratic institutions.

In a statement issued on Monday, Saifi said Parliament is the country's highest democratic forum, where issues of national importance are debated, public concerns are addressed, and policies shaping the nation's future are framed. Disruptions to its proceedings, he said, are neither in the interest of the country nor its citizens.
He noted that in a healthy democracy, both the government and the Opposition have equally significant roles. While the Opposition has the responsibility to raise issues of public concern, hold the government accountable, and offer constructive suggestions, this should be done through debate and parliamentary procedures rather than repeated disruptions.
Saifi pointed out that every minute of Parliament's functioning involves substantial public expenditure, and repeated adjournments result in the loss of valuable time and taxpayers' money. "People elect their representatives to debate, deliberate and find solutions to national issues—not to create deadlock," he said.
He observed that frequent disruptions not only delay discussions on important legislation and public welfare measures but also diminish the dignity of Parliament and weaken public confidence in democratic institutions.
Emphasising that differences of opinion are a natural part of democracy, Saifi said such differences should be resolved through dialogue, discussion and adherence to established parliamentary traditions.
He urged all political parties to rise above partisan considerations and place national interest above political differences. Parliament, he said, should remain a platform for meaningful discussions on critical issues such as economic development, social welfare, national security and inclusive growth.
Expressing confidence in India's democratic system, Saifi said constructive cooperation between the government and the Opposition, while maintaining parliamentary decorum, would further strengthen democracy and reinforce the people's faith in Parliament.
