Srinagar, July 21: Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, Sakeena Itoo, on Monday called for a united, multi-stakeholder effort to combat the alarming rise in drug abuse in Jammu and Kashmir.
She made these remarks during a day-long seminar titled "Drug-Free Kashmir: A Practical Step Towards a Drug-Free Society", held at the Government College of Education (GCOE), MA Road Srinagar.
In her keynote address, the Minister stressed the urgent need for coordinated action involving religious leaders, families, civil society, law enforcement, educators, and government institutions. “A drug-free Jammu and Kashmir is not only the need of the hour, but a necessity for the survival and well-being of our future generations,” she said.
Highlighting the growing vulnerability of youth to substance abuse, Sakeena noted that government efforts alone are insufficient. She underscored the importance of community participation, particularly that of religious and local leaders, in spreading awareness and offering support.
She further stated that drug de-addiction centres have already been established at all district headquarters to assist those battling addiction.
The Minister praised the organisers and the college for addressing a “burning social issue,” and urged the seminar to produce actionable strategies to counter drug abuse effectively.
The event featured cultural performances portraying the damaging effects of addiction on families and society and witnessed large participation from educators, students, healthcare workers, law enforcement officials, and civil society representatives.
Among the dignitaries present were Joint Director Information Kashmir, Syed Shahnawaz Bukhari; Nodal Principal Kashmir Division Colleges, Prof. Seema Naz; Principal of Government Women’s College Srinagar; and senior district officers.
