Salal Dam Opens Multiple Spillway Gates as Chenab Inflow Surges

July 28, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Reasi, July 28: Authorities on Tuesday opened several spillway gates at the Salal Hydroelectric Power Station on the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district after a sharp rise in water inflow due to persistent rainfall in the upper catchment areas.

Officials said the excess water is being released in a controlled manner to maintain the reservoir at a safe level and ensure the smooth operation of the hydroelectric project.

The release has significantly increased the water level and flow of the Chenab River downstream, prompting authorities to issue a public advisory.

Residents living along the riverbanks, as well as people involved in fishing, sand extraction, or other activities near the river, have been urged to stay away from the Chenab and avoid unnecessary movement along its banks until the water level returns to normal.

Authorities said the situation remains under constant surveillance, and any further release of water will depend on the volume of inflow reaching the reservoir.
