Security has been heightened across tourist destinations in Kashmir ahead of the first anniversary of the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack in which 25 tourists and a local pony operator were killed.
Officials said all security agencies have been placed on alert to prevent any subversive activity, with special focus on tourist hubs. Senior officers have reviewed arrangements, and ground-level meetings have been held to ensure a robust security plan.
The attack on April 22, 2025, at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam had led to a temporary drop in tourism and closure of nearly 50 tourist spots. Most have since reopened after security audits, and tourist activity has gradually recovered.
Authorities have introduced new safety measures, including QR-code based identification for all registered service providers such as pony operators and vendors. Officials said the system allows tourists to verify credentials instantly through mobile scanning.
Kashmir IGP V.K. Birdi recently reviewed security arrangements and directed enhanced protection at vulnerable tourist locations.
