Srinagar, Oct 2: Jammu and Kashmir recorded terror-related activity in eight of the first nine months of 2026, with September emerging as the most active month during the period, according to Jammu and Kashmir Police data cited by officials.
The police data showed four terror-related incidents in September and the killing of five terrorists, with no civilian or security force fatalities reported during the month.
The month also witnessed the killing of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorist Mohammad Asif, alias Hashim Musa and Fauji Musa, in a joint operation in Budgam on September 29.
According to officials, the operation was part of a sustained intelligence-led campaign, code-named Operation Sheruwali, which began in May.
“The focus remains on intelligence-based operations, coordination between agencies and sustained searches in areas where terrorists may be hiding,” a senior police official said.
The year began with three terror-related incidents in January, in which one security force personnel and one terrorist were killed, according to the data. February also recorded three incidents, with six terrorists killed and no civilian or security force casualties reported.
March saw two terror-related incidents and the killing of two terrorists, while one terrorist was killed in April. May recorded one killing and also marked the reported beginning of Operation Sheruwali.
June was the first month of the year with no reported terror-related incident or casualty. Activity resumed in July, which recorded three incidents and four fatalities—two civilians, one security force personnel and one terrorist. August again passed without a reported terror-related incident or fatality.
September subsequently saw a rise in counter-terror operations.
On September 4, security forces killed a Pakistani national identified as Yasir, an alleged LeT terrorist, during an operation in the Ashdar Gali area of Budgam. An AK-series rifle and other war-like stores were recovered, officials said.
On September 12, security forces recovered the remains of a Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist from the Seojdhar forest area of Doda and recovered an M4 carbine.
On September 17, two alleged JeM terrorists were killed in a joint operation in the Brattal Sohan and Khubban areas of Majalta in Udhampur district. Police identified them as Saddam and Mustafa. An AK assault rifle, M4 carbine, Glock pistol, magazines and grenades were reportedly recovered.
The month ended with the September 29 operation in Budgam in which Musa was killed.
According to the government account, the operation was launched in the Korag-Yousmarg area following intelligence inputs about terrorist movement. Security forces subsequently recovered Musa’s body from the Palmaidan area along with war-like stores.
Security officials had described Musa as a senior LeT terrorist wanted in connection with several terror-related cases in J&K.
The Ministry of Home Affairs maintains official lists and records concerning designated terrorist organisations and counter-terrorism matters.
The September operations, officials said, underline the continued emphasis on intelligence-led action, inter-agency coordination and sustained searches in vulnerable areas.
The police data, covering the first nine months of 2026, indicates that while activity remained uneven across the year, periods of increased counter-terror operations were interspersed with months reporting no incidents.
