Shehla Rashid: Recognizing Modi Govt as the Game Changer in Kashmir's Peace

December 03, 2023 | Israar Shahid

The recent tweet where Shehla Rashid acknowledges the Modi Government for restoring peace in the valley went viral on Twitter. She stated, 'What caused my change of heart is the realization that the PM @narendramodi is a selfless man who is taking radical decisions to transform India. He has braved intense criticism but remained steadfast to his vision of inclusive development that leaves no one behind.' This is also what she spoke on ANI News, which garnered 4.7 million public views.

Reflecting on the era of parallel governments, one led by the Muftis and Abdullahs, and another by separatists, it becomes evident that a lack of strong political will delayed the peace and prosperity we are witnessing now. It seems that past government establishments were more inclined towards their own electoral gains than the well-being of the region. The common Kashmiri was systematically fed misinformation and falsehood, manipulated to oppose government establishments by both the mainstream and separatist factions, whose own progeny enjoyed the peaceful sun of the UK or US. However, the last four years have left the common Kashmiri astounded by the outcomes of the abrogation of Article 370. They have experienced peace, development, tourism, and more. This article unveils the transformation of “Shehla Rashid Shohra,” who was once a fervent critic of the PM and HM, now applauding them for delivering what Kashmir needed most—PEACE.

Who is Shehla Rashid?

Born in the heart of Srinagar's old city, Habba Kadal in Downtown, Shehla, much like other children born in the '90s, grappled with the impact of violence and street unrest during her early years. Despite these challenges, she pursued computer engineering at NIT Srinagar, marking the beginning of her academic journey. Her professional trajectory led her to HCL Technologies as a software engineer. However, her thirst for knowledge drove her to Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, where she pursued an M.A. in Sociology and later earned an MPhil in Law and Governance. Transitioning into the realm of research at the same university, Shehla embarked on a Ph.D., exploring the profound impact of algorithm-based decision-making on policy formulation. Throughout her academic journey, Shehla has consistently demonstrated excellence, securing top positions in every examination she undertook. Beyond the realm of academic achievements, Shehla's life has been marred by the painful specter of domestic violence within the confines of her home. She has bravely acknowledged the mental, physical, and emotional abuse her father inflicted upon her mother and sister, tormenting her mother in unimaginable ways. This harrowing experience has made Shehla exceptionally attuned to the profound impacts of violent acts, propelling her to advocate for change and justice.

When Did Shehla Become a Face Nationwide?

Upon entering JNU, Shehla swiftly evolved into a precocious politician. Serving as the Vice-President of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Student’s Union (JNUSU) and aligning herself with the All-India Student’s Association (AISA), she plunged into the political landscape. The year 2016 marked a turning point when a viral mobile video showcased JNU students protesting the hanging of Afzal Guru, with some chanting the controversial slogan, giving rise to the term “Tukde Tukde Gang.” Shehla, along with Umar Khalid and Kanahya Kumar, was prominently associated with this term, vehemently criticizing Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah.
Despite benefiting from a scholarship provided by the Government of India for her studies at JNU, Shehla consistently voiced anti-state sentiments on her social platforms. Another notable chapter unfolded in 2019 when she briefly joined Shah Faesal’s Jammu and Kashmir People’s Movement (JKPM), formed on March 16, 2019. However, she resigned from the party post the abrogation of Article 370, later becoming a key petitioner in the Supreme Court challenging the abrogation. Eventually, she withdrew her name when the SC geared up for hearings. Throughout, Shehla remained steadfastly left-leaning, failing to acknowledge the commendable efforts of the present-day government. This stance propelled her into national prominence.

What Made Shehla to Change Her Mind?

The post-2019 metamorphosis in Kashmir stands glaringly apparent to observers both within the nation and on the global stage. Shehla Rashid, once a vocal critic of the Central government and its Kashmir policy, underwent a profound transformation as she bore witness to the affirmative changes unfolding in Kashmir post-2019. In a candid podcast revelation, she acknowledged relying on second hand information that had distorted her perception of Kashmir. However, upon recognizing the actual transformations, she discarded ideologies and prisms devoid of both explanatory and predictive power. As a human rights activist fervently campaigning against civilian killings, Shehla observed the cessation of such atrocities in Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A. She, alongside myself, asserts that the key to restoring peace in Kashmir lies in the resolute political will embodied by the Hon’ble Prime Minister. She contends that the Prime Minister crafted a bloodless solution for Kashmir. The palpable changes in Kashmir over the last four years are indisputable.
Drawing parallels with the Israel-Gaza situation, where Gaza is cordoned off and residents must seek permits, the contrast is stark in India, where individuals can acquire property, land, and jobs irrespective of regional or religious affiliations. Shehla astutely notes in her podcast that, compared to Gaza, we should be thankful that Kashmir is not subjected to such restrictions. Challenging conspiracy theories that propagate Muslim discrimination, the truth is that Muslims in India, constituting the second-largest majority, enjoy the same rights and benefits as every other citizen, transcending religious or regional lines. The debunking of false narratives against Indian security forces in Kashmir has been a recurrent theme, reaffirming their commitment and credibility.
Shehla succinctly defines three years of LG Sinha with three words: ‘Peace, Accountability, and Integrity,’ resonating with the evident reality. The separate flag, constitution, and other provisions, rather than serving any constructive purpose in the valley, perpetuated a sense of separatist ideology. Their removal through the abrogation of Article 370 was a necessary step, leading to a perceptible congruence between Delhi and J&K over the past four years. Noteworthy is the historical context of the prompt declaration of results in JKPSC’s Combined Competitive Exam, leaving no room for manipulation. The restoration of peace, developmental initiatives, accountability, integrity, justice, and the dignified treatment of commoners have collectively reshaped the perspectives of Kashmiris, including one who was once an ardent critic of the Hon’ble PM. Inescapable now is the acknowledgment that the Prime Minister is a selfless leader driven solely by national interests.

Shehla’s Role as a College Teacher

Recently appointed as an assistant professor and securing the top position in the selection process, Shehla Rashid is poised to wield significant influence in moulding the minds of her students. Beyond the confines of teaching Sociology, she is poised to instill in her students the values of truth, wisdom, and the transformative power of realization. Her commitment extends to imparting the invaluable lesson of recognizing the good and giving credit where it is due.
