Shoppers defy biting cold Sunday Market sees massive turnout

December 01, 2025 | BK News Service

Despite biting cold and Chillai Kalan like conditions gripping the Kashmir Valley, Srinagar’s popular Sunday Market witnessed a massive turnout as thousands of shoppers poured in, defying freezing temperatures to purchase essentials and winter goods.

From early morning, locals from different parts of the Valley were seen flocking to the open-air bazaar, braving icy winds and dropping mercury to shop for clothes, blankets, footwear, utensils and other household items at comparatively cheaper rates. The scene reflected a rare energy on the roads, with long queues at several stalls and vendors struggling to manage the rush at peak hours.
Vendors said business remained strong throughout the day, with footfall far exceeding expectations considering the severe cold conditions. Many slopesellers reported brisk sales, particularly of woollen wear, blankets and winter accessories, which were in high demand as temperatures continue to plunge.
“Every year, cold affects business, but today was different. People came in large numbers and sales were better than last Sunday,” said one garment seller to the news agency Kashmir News Trust. Another vendor dealing in winter bedding said that customers were purchasing in bulk in anticipation of harsher days ahead.
Shoppers, on the other hand, said they were compelled to venture out despite the freezing weather to complete necessary winter shopping. “Though prices are lower here but varieties are more. Cold cannot stop us when winter supplies are a necessity,” said a visitor from downtown Srinagar.
The strong turnout amid harsh weather underlined the economic importance of the Sunday Market for both traders and locals in the city, especially during the winter season when household requirements increase sharply.
