Significant progress made in Dal Lake rejuvenation efforts

February 09, 2024 | BK CORRESPONDENT

In a remarkable stride towards the restoration of Dal Lake, authorities have reported substantial achievements in rejuvenating this iconic water body. According to recent updates, approximately one-third of the lake has undergone a rejuvenation process, marking a significant milestone in ongoing conservation efforts.

Key highlights of the progress include the clearance of 6.5 square kilometers of the lake's surface from invasive lily growth. This initiative has resulted in the expansion of the open expanse of the Dal Lake to over 20.3 square kilometers, a notable increase observed for the first time in recent years.
Efforts to address waste and sewage management have also seen commendable advancements. Authorities revealed that a calculated load of 48 million liters per day (MLD) of waste and sewage has been managed, with 36 MLD effectively treated by five Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), to which all houseboats have been connected.
Additionally, significant strides have been made in dredging operations to enhance the navigability of the lake. A total of 20 navigation channels, spanning a length of 10 kilometers, have been successfully retrieved, facilitating smoother transit across the water body. Moreover, approximately 150,000 cubic meters of silt have been dredged out from the settling basin over the past two years, further contributing to the overall revitalization of the lake ecosystem.
These accomplishments underscore the concerted efforts of authorities and stakeholders in addressing the multifaceted challenges facing Dal Lake. The progress made serves as a testament to the commitment towards preserving this natural treasure, ensuring its ecological sustainability, and enhancing the overall quality of life for the communities reliant on its resources.
