In a crackdown on misinformation, Bandipora Police have arrested six individuals for circulating fabricated and misleading content on social media regarding a recent encounter in the Kulnar Bazipora Ajas area. The false narratives, shared across various digital platforms, were found to be not only factually incorrect but also capable of disrupting public order and endangering national security.
Police sources said they received credible inputs from multiple channels indicating that certain social media users had uploaded distorted versions of the April 24 encounter involving security forces. The individuals reportedly attempted to misrepresent the incident, casting aspersions on the role of the police and security agencies, and spreading confusion among the public.
Taking serious note of the situation, Bandipora Police registered an FIR (No. 71/25) under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 66(f) of the Information Technology Act at Police Station Bandipora. The sections pertain to endangering public safety and misusing digital platforms for unlawful activities. Officials said such acts are criminal in nature and have the potential to escalate into larger law and order issues.
Six individuals involved in the act have been arrested. Police said their online activities were being closely monitored and their posts were found to be intentionally misleading. Investigators have initiated a detailed probe to uncover the full extent of the network and determine if others were also involved in spreading such misinformation.
Authorities have warned that the misuse of social media for spreading baseless rumours or endangering peace will not be tolerated. Bandipora Police have urged residents and digital content creators to exercise caution and responsibility while using online platforms. The public has been advised to refrain from sharing unverified information, particularly on sensitive matters involving security operations.
The case remains under investigation, with police indicating that further arrests and legal action could follow as more evidence comes to light.
