Abstract

Mahatma Gandhi, the name which is remembered as a great figure in the history of World. A simple man with his influential and powerful principles grabbed the intention of millions of people who today not only respect him but also they follow his ideology as well as his principles.
Every human possess different ideologies or different opinions regarding things, but some perspectives influence the majority of people who try to adopt those principles because they found these principles unique and beneficial.

Introduction

Almost every person in the World is aware of the thoughts and ideas of Mahatma Gandhi and even today his ideas and thoughts are relevant in the modern contemporary World. The perspective of Mahatma Gandhi on the topic ‘ Skill development in India’ is found to be unique as well as useful for all of the Indian people, Gandhi completely focused on continuous learning process which will improve and raise the youth in the various crafts, industries, trades, and professions. He himself worked hard to promote skills as promotion of Khadi ( hand spinning), domestic industries etc . He also was engaged in propagation of skills along with the struggle for India’s freedom which reflects us how Gandhi functioned himself while propagating ‘ skill development’ particularly in the field of hand spinning. For him every skill is equal and essential in every activity right in the use of weapons to skills required in medical practice. He even defined art in context of skill as he called “Art is skill in work” . He included in that the essence of the scientific method and referred to the need for technical proficiency in any skill as, he wrote about the charkha.
He also defined skill in reference to the Swadeshi, he made a statement that only that thing will be named as swadeshi which is completely made in India by indigenous skill without the influence of any external force. He put more emphasis on skill importance in any activity, by bringing religious quoting of Gita, Yoga is skill in action(work). He says that Krishna asks Arjuna to be a yogi, for yoga means nothing but skill or wisdom in work or action.

Objectives

Understand and analyze the skill education.
Some important implementation steps for skill development

Methodology

Some e-contents, websites, related to Gandhi’s perspective on skill education and principles of M.K Gandhi , etc.
It Is clear from the information above that Gandhi constantly sought out new and improved abilities in almost every aspect of his life, including activities he encountered or participated in. He employed the broadest definition of “skill.” He advocated for ongoing exploration and learning—a philosophy he coined as “practical idealism.” It required embracing technical and creative know-how while remaining artistic and scientific. It covered cognitive, mental, and manual skills. It encompassed a wide range of related attributes and characteristics, including initiative and business, tenacity, patience and sincerity, honesty, cooperation and effort, common sense, simplicity, efficiency, and organizing skills, intent, will, devotion and imagination, knowledge, accuracy and earnestness, and so forth. His dissemination of hand-spinning and hand-weaving for the creation of khadi, which he transformed into an all-India movement as an integral element of the independence movement, which he led for nearly three decades, was a true testament to his unique pursuit of skill development. In a similar vein, the way he promoted “Other Village Industries” and several other vocations and crafts serves as a historical illustration of the quest for the concept of “skill development.” Studying Gandhi’s entire public life—from his 1893 arrival in South Africa to his martyrdom—will help us get as much insight as possible for our own "skill development" efforts.
Apart from this information we need to focus on implementation of Gandhian ideas for upholding the strength of vocational and skill based education in our country.

Education – Head, Heart and Hand

For Mahatma Gandhi ji, education is not just about the use of mind or head, heart and hand also plays an important role. We need to focus on traditional art as well as the art of technology which will improve our traditional art.
Implications for Schools and Colleges
Apart from schools and colleges, we need to take care, explore as well as understand the local needs and providing trainings as per the requirements.

The Local Economy, Self-Employment, and MSME

We also need to focus on skilling the youth at different levels especially at local level as per needs of the village and district level.
We hope this topic on Implementing Gandhian ideas for strengthening vocational and skill based education in India would help schools, colleges, and other institutions in adopting these ideas and thoughts and contemporize them for the current needs of education.
