
The inaugural session of “Empower HER 2025”, a two-day seminar aimed at inspiring and equipping women in Science, Technology, and Entrepreneurship (STE), was held at the FVSc & AH, Shuhama campus of SKUAST-Kashmir. The program seeks to address the underrepresentation of women in these fields and provide a platform for mentorship, collaboration, and empowerment. Organized by the Division of Animal Biotechnology, the seminar featured interactive sessions and inspiring talks by women leaders to build confidence, encourage innovation, and foster inclusion.
Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai, Vice Chancellor of SKUAST-Kashmir, was the Chief Guest at the inaugural function held at the Faculty Outreach Centre, while Prof. Yasmeen Syed Ashai, Director of the Rinchan Center of West Himalayan Cultures at IUST, was the Guest of Honour. They were accompanied by Prof. Rihana Habib Kanth, Director Extension, Prof. Azmat Alam Khan, Registrar, and Prof. Riaz A. Shah, Dean FVSc & AH.
In his address, Prof. Ganai praised the organizers for dedicating the seminar to women empowerment, highlighting the critical role of women in science, technology, and leadership within the University. He emphasized the importance of improving gender equity and inclusiveness as part of India’s progress toward becoming a developed nation. Prof. Ganai encouraged organizers to collect data on women working in science and leadership roles at the University and hoped the sessions would help participants express their views publicly and contribute to awareness campaigns on empowerment initiatives.
Prof. Yasmeen Syed Ashai spoke on government-led initiatives and the importance of challenging societal stereotypes. She stressed increasing women’s participation in STEM fields to foster diversity and bring fresh perspectives.
Prof. Rihana Habib Kanth shared her personal journey as the lone female Director of Extension in the country, highlighting challenges faced by women in science and technology. She discussed emerging opportunities in Artificial Intelligence, Biotechnology, and Climate-Smart Farming, stressing the need for women to stay aligned with global technological advancements.
Prof. Azmat Alam Khan highlighted gender equality within SKUAST-Kashmir, pointing out women’s leadership roles across campuses as a model for other organizations.
The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Riaz A. Shah, expressing hope that the seminar would meet its objectives through the support of all stakeholders. The program was set in motion with a quote by Marie Curie, shared by organizing secretary Dr. Sahar Saleem, emphasizing the value of believing in one’s gifts and pursuing them at all costs.
