In a proactive step towards improving animal welfare and public health in Srinagar, Commissioner of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Fazlul Haseeb (IAS), conducted an inspection tour of multiple Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres in the city today. The visit aligns with SMC’s ongoing mission to humanely manage the stray dog population in accordance with the guidelines of the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI).
Mr. Haseeb was accompanied by the Joint Commissioners (Administration and Works), the Health Officer, and Executive Engineers during the inspection.
The Commissioner first visited the fully functional ABC Centre at Tengpora, which serves as a key hub for the sterilization and vaccination of stray dogs. Equipped with operational theatres, recovery kennels, and post-operative care units, the facility was reviewed for workflow efficiency and adherence to animal welfare standards. Mr. Haseeb interacted with the veterinary staff and ensured that all procedures were being conducted in line with AWBI norms.
He then visited the ABC Centre at Shuhama, a collaborative initiative between SMC and the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences at SKUAST-Kashmir. Commending the partnership, the Commissioner emphasized the need for sustained coordination to ensure quality veterinary services and smooth implementation of ABC protocols.
The inspection concluded at the under-construction ABC facility in Chatterhama, where nearly 80% of the work has been completed. Designed as a modern facility with multiple operation tables, holding areas, and advanced waste disposal systems, the centre is expected to significantly boost SMC’s capacity. Mr. Haseeb directed officials to expedite the remaining work, maintaining strict quality standards and timelines.
Reiterating the importance of ABC initiatives, the Commissioner said that these centres not only help control the stray dog population but also play a vital role in urban sanitation, public safety, and the prevention of zoonotic diseases. He stressed the need for increased community engagement, urging citizens to report stray dog hotspots and cooperate with capture and release operations.
The visits are part of SMC’s broader agenda to modernize civic infrastructure, promote humane animal care, and enhance Srinagar’s preparedness in addressing public health challenges
