Srinagar, Feb 7: Employees of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) staged a large protest at the SMC headquarters on Saturday, demanding the immediate release of pending salaries and the regularisation of daily wage workers.
Protesters said they have not received wages for several months, causing severe financial hardship for themselves and their families. Daily wagers highlighted the uncertainty over their jobs, stressing that delays in payment affect their ability to meet basic expenses such as rent, school fees, and household needs.
Holding slogans and placards, the employees called attention to their vital role in keeping the city’s civic services running, yet said they continue to face neglect and unfair treatment. They warned that the protest would escalate if their demands were not addressed promptly.
No official response was reported from SMC authorities at the time of filing.
