Snowfall revives Kashmir tourism

December 27, 2025 | Mir Kaiser

Fresh snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir has infused new hope into the Valley’s tourism sector after a challenging year marked by security issues and adverse weather conditions.

Several upper areas, including popular tourist destinations such as Gulmarg and Sonamarg, witnessed moderate to heavy snowfall, bringing an end to a prolonged dry spell. The fresh blanket of snow has once again turned these resorts into major attractions, raising expectations of increased tourist arrivals during the winter season.
Tourism in the Valley had suffered a severe blow following the April 22 terror attack at the Baisaran meadows in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists and sharply affected visitor confidence at the start of the peak season. Although the sector later showed signs of recovery, heavy rains in August and September triggered flood-like situations across several areas of Jammu and Kashmir. Frequent closures of the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway further disrupted travel, while security-related developments outside the region in November led to another dip in tourist movement.
Despite these setbacks, officials and tourism stakeholders say confidence is gradually returning due to sustained promotional efforts by the Union Territory administration and the onset of favourable winter conditions.
Tourists currently visiting the Valley have welcomed the snowfall. Sangeeta, a visitor from Jaipur, described the experience as magical, calling it her first snowfall in Kashmir. Ritika, a tourist from Delhi, said the pleasant atmosphere and warm hospitality added to the charm of their stay.
Many visitors said they planned their trips based on weather forecasts issued by the India Meteorological Department. Kartik, a tourist from Maharashtra, said his journey went smoothly and added that he felt safe during his visit, encouraging others to travel to Kashmir.
Local tourism stakeholders have also expressed optimism. Riyaz Ahmad, a tourism associate, said the first snowfall of Chillai Kalan is crucial for the winter season and could lead to a rise in tourist arrivals if weather conditions remain favourable.
Residents dependent on tourism-related livelihoods are hopeful as well. Gh Hassan, a pony owner from Sonamarg, said snowfall brings employment opportunities. “When tourists come to see snow, we get work. This year, we are optimistic,” he said.
With winter setting in and tourist resorts covered in snow, Kashmir’s tourism sector is once again looking ahead to a brighter season.
