Snowfall revives winter tourism in Gulmarg

Gulmarg, Dec 28: The recent snowfall in upper reaches and tourist destinations has revived winter tourism in the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and transformed the region into a winter wonderland ahead of New Year 2026.

Hotels are reporting nearly 100 per cent occupancy, while domestic tourists and foreigners are flocking to the snow-clad slopes, enjoying skiing, sightseeing, and the scenic beauty of the Himalayas.
A tourist Renu Verma from Pune described the snowfall as a memorable part of their holiday.
“It’s very good, it’s cold, but we like it. We are lucky we saw snow.”
“It feels wonderful. Witnessing snowfall is a memorable and life-time experience. We planned it according to the snow season; we knew it would happen at this time, so we are here,” said another group of tourists.
After the recent snowfall, the plains and upper reaches of Gulmarg are covered with snow giving a picturesque look to the visitors.
The snowfall has acted as a psychological and economic reset for the local industry, which had struggled after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 25 tourists and a local pony wala were killed.
The Gulmarg Gondola remains the primary draw, transporting visitors to Apharwat Peak at 14,403 feet (4,390 m). Known for its ultra-dry Himalayan powder snow, Gulmarg is rated among Asia's top five ski destinations.
The tourism stakeholders are upbeat as the MeT has predicted another spell of snowfall on eve of Near Year.
“With more snow likely, Gulmarg has become the focal point for travellers seeking winter sports, helping revive confidence in Kashmir’s winter tourism circuit,” they said.
Skiers and snowboarders are returning in growing numbers to Gulmarg’s world-class slopes. The snowfall has significantly boosted interest among both seasoned winter sports enthusiasts and first-time visitors.
“Winter tourism is a vital economic lifeline for Kashmir, especially during the colder months. Snow-based activities generate employment, support local businesses, and attract both domestic and international travellers,” said a Gulmarg hotelier.
Pony wallahs, tourist guides, shopkeepers, transport operators and other service providers are expected to benefit as tourist inflow continues during the winter months.
With peak winter still ahead, tourism stakeholders are banking on consistent snowfall to offset earlier losses.
