‘Dev & environmental protection must go hand in hand’
Ganderbal, Oct 15: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Thursday said that the picturesque meadow of Sonamarg in central Kashmir will be transformed into a premier adventure and winter sports destination over the coming years.
Talking to reporters after inauguration of the 70th National school games in Ganderbal, Omar said that earlier the Sonamarg used to remain closed during winter and it has been only a year or so after the Sonamarg tunnel was opened that Sonamarg is accessible in winters.
“With the construction of the tunnel, Sonamarg is now accessible throughout the year. We want to promote rafting during summer and skiing, skating and other winter sports activities,” he said.
The CM said he would work with Kangan MLA Mian Mehar Ali to further strengthen Sonamarg’s position on the tourism map.
Asked about the delay in eco-tourism projects at Tragbal and Mohanmarg, Omar said such projects sometimes take time because clearances are required from the Forest, Environment and Wildlife authorities.
"However, by following due process, we will secure all required clearances and develop these new destinations," he added.
On the land acquired for the Central University of Kashmir, CM said the government would honour the procedure adopted at the time of acquisition and implement the terms agreed upon with the landowners.
"Whatever written agreement was signed with them (landowners), and whatever terms were formally executed on paper, will be implemented," he said.
On development in Ganderbal over the past two years, Omar said the government was working to accelerate projects across sectors.
"The goal has been to touch every sector of governance. Today as well, projects worth nearly Rs 60 crore were either inaugurated or had their foundation stones laid. This includes a major bridge worth Rs 40 crore to cross the Jhelum, where work is underway," he said.
On traffic congestion caused by Chinar trees along the Beehama–Kheer Bhawani road, the Chief Minister acknowledged the difficulties faced by commuters and stressed the need for a practical solution.
“Development and environmental protection must go hand in hand. We may have to remove some trees and plant eight to ten Chinar trees elsewhere, away from roads,” he said.
