An outreach programme aimed to popularise mathematics was organised by South Campus of the University of Kashmir at higher secondary school, Srigufwara, Anantnag.
The programme is part of a month-long campaign organised by the Department of Mathematics, South Campus, in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology, J&K Government, to popularise the subject in secondary and senior secondary schools of Kashmir.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Zainapora Shopian, Mr Mushtaq Ahmad Lone was the chief guest on the occasion.
Urging the students to opt for mathematics, he said, “Being a student of mathematics has given me confidence to excel in life and undertake reasoning in the KAS and other competitive examinations.”
Director South Campus Dr Mukhtar Ahmad Khanday delivered the keynote address on the ‘importance of mathematics and role of individuals’.
“Higher education needs to be connected with school education and South Campus has taken this initiative in that direction,” he said, adding that teachers, parents and students have to play an equal role to popularise mathematics and provide a supportive environment for learning the subject.
On the inaugural day, four technical sessions were conducted by Dr G Nabi Dar, faculty at Department of Physics KU and Dr Mohd Ibrahim, faculty at the Department of Mathematics, South Campus, besides Basharat Ahmad, Lecturer at GHSS, Salia, Anantnag, who threw light on career options for mathematics students across the country and abroad.
More than 150 students from 20 high and higher secondary schools, along with their escort teachers, participated in the programme.
Mohammad Shafi, Lecturer GHSS Srigufwara conducted proceedings of the event, while Principal GHSS Srigufwara, Mohammad Yousuf, delivered the vote of thanks.
