Students from at least 15 secondary and senior secondary schools attended the second session of the ongoing Mathematics Popularisation Programme at Government Boys Model Higher Secondary School (GBMHSS), Anantnag.
The month-long programme has been organised by the Department of Mathematics, South Campus University of Kashmir, in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology, J&K.
Chief Education Officer Anantnag, Mr Khalil Ahmad graced the event as chief guest and congratulated the South Campus administration for reaching out to the education department with the mass awareness programme.
It will certainly prove beneficial to inspire more students to opt for the subject at multiple levels, he said.
Director South Campus Dr Mukhtar Ahmad Khanday delivered the keynote address and spoke in detail about the role of mathematics in solving the problems that people face in their daily lives.
“There is a rapid decline in students opting mathematics at the school level, thus becoming an impediment in producing future mathematicians,” he said, urging students to pursue mathematics for “better understanding of other subjects”.
The escort teachers of the participating students, lecturers and officials from South Campus were present.
Earlier, Sajad Ahmad, faculty, Department of Mathematics, South Campus and Convener of the event, outlined the rationale of the campaign.
Principal of the School, Manzoor Ahmad, highlighted the importance of mathematics and its career opportunities.
Three brainstorming sessions were conducted by Dr Aijaz Ahmad Najar, faculty at GDC Kulgam, Mr Basharat Hussain, Lecturer HSS Salia Anantnag and Mr Ali Mohammad Salroo.
Mr Younis, Lecturer, GBMHSS Anantnag presented a vote of thanks and conducted the proceedings of the session.
