Marking the 26th anniversary of India's victory in the Kargil War, a solemn wreath-laying ceremony was held at the War Memorial in Rangapahar Military Station, Nagaland. The tribute, organised by Spear Corps of the Indian Army, honoured the courage, sacrifice, and indomitable spirit of the Kargil heroes who laid down their lives defending the nation in 1999.
Lieutenant General Abhijit S Pendharkar, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Spear Corps, led the commemorative event, joined by two prominent veterans from Nagaland — Lt Col Imti Maken (Retd), an 84-year-old war veteran, and Honorary Captain Imli Akum, MVC (Retd), a decorated hero of the Kargil War.
The event commenced with a traditional military homage as the three veterans laid wreaths at the memorial amidst a gathering of serving soldiers, ex-servicemen, and families of martyrs. A ceremonial guard paid respects as bugles sounded the “Last Post” and the national flag was lowered in remembrance of the fallen.
Hony Capt Imli Akum, who was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for gallantry during the Kargil War, stood solemnly beside younger soldiers, representing a living bridge between generations of valour. His presence was a powerful reminder of the bravery displayed during Operation Vijay, which successfully evicted enemy intrusions in the icy heights of Kargil.
Lt Gen Pendharkar, in his address, paid rich tribute to the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice. “Kargil Vijay Diwas is not just a day of remembrance but a celebration of unwavering courage. We honour those who chose country above self and etched their names in history with blood and grit,” he said.
Lt Col Imti Maken (Retd), a respected figure in Nagaland’s veteran community, also offered heartfelt remarks. “I salute every soldier who stood tall in the face of adversity. Their legacy must continue to inspire future generations to uphold the highest ideals of service,” he stated.
The ceremony also included a special tribute to the soldiers from the Northeast, who have served and sacrificed in all major conflicts, reinforcing the deep bond between the region and the Indian Army. Schoolchildren, NCC cadets, and local citizens also joined in the commemorations, laying flowers and lighting candles at the memorial.
The event underscored the Indian Army’s continued commitment to honouring its heroes and connecting with communities across regions. As the nation observed Kargil Vijay Diwas, the ceremony in Rangapahar stood out as a moment of unity, reverence, and patriotic pride in Nagaland.
The memory of the Kargil martyrs lives on — not just in history books, but in the hearts of those who gather every year to remember their sacrifice and reaffirm the nation's gratitude.
