
Kohima, April 8: AssamRifles under SpearCorps conducted a solemn Wreath Laying Ceremony to pay tribute to eight brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during an ambush on April 7, 1998, in Nagaland. The ceremony commemorated Havildar Ramadhar Thakur, Rifleman Balbir Singh, Rifleman Govind Singh Negi, Rifleman Balai Chandra Howladhar, Rifleman Sherman Lohar, Rifleman Tarsem Lal, Rifleman Rabit Sangma, and Rifleman Maharaja Ram.
The ambush occurred on a convoy moving from Zunhebuto to Kiphire in Nagaland, when enemy forces launched a surprise attack. The fallen soldiers displayed extraordinary courage and determination while defending their comrades and ensuring the mission continued despite heavy odds. Their sacrifice is remembered as an enduring example of bravery and dedication to duty.
During the ceremony, senior officers, veterans, and personnel paid homage by laying wreaths at the memorial, observing two minutes of silence, and reciting tributes highlighting the courage, discipline, and selfless service of the martyrs.
