As the blessed month of Ramadan begins, a significant increase in the number of patients suffering from stomach and intestinal problems is being seen in hospitals and clinics across the district. According to medical experts, sudden changes in lifestyle and diet, and carelessness during Iftar and Suhoor are the main reasons for this. Medical experts say that during fasting, the stomach remains empty for several hours, after which the sudden consumption of heavy foods during Iftar puts pressure on the digestive system. Frequent consumption of pakoras, samosas and other fried items during Iftar causes acidity and indigestion. Low consumption of water between Suhoor and Iftar causes constipation and kidney problems. Drinking soda water and cold drinks, smoking on an empty stomach causes gas and bloating. Lying down immediately after Suhoor or Iftar causes heartburn and reflux problems. Gastroenterologists have advised citizens to avoid these problems by following a few simple rules: "Start Iftar with dates and plain water so that the stomach gets a chance to activate gradually." Use yogurt in Suhoor, it prevents acidity throughout the day. Eat fiber-rich foods like barley porridge or wheat bread. Eat at regular intervals instead of eating too much at one time. Avoid chili, spicy chana chaat and pakoras. A 15 to 20-minute light walk two hours after Iftar is an elixir for digestion. Use fresh fruit juices and lemon water, avoid artificially sweetened drinks. Medical experts have warned that if severe stomach pain, persistent constipation or severe heartburn persists, consult a doctor immediately instead of self-diagnosing. Ramadan is the month of patience and moderation, so moderation in eating and drinking is the only guarantee of health. Shafaat Ahmed Wani Bachwara Srinagar Khanmoh Srinagar
