December 22, 2024 | Ayaan Wani

The harshest 4-day winter period, known as Chillai-Kalan, has started in Kashmir with a severe cold wave and Srinagar recording coldest December night in over three decades on Saturday.
A MeT official said Srinagar recorded its coldest December night in 30 years as the mercury dipped to a bone-chilling -8.5°C.
This is the third lowest December temperature ever recorded in Srinagar in the last 133 years.
“At -8.5°C Srinagar recorded the coldest night of December since 1990. The all-time lowest temperature was -12.8°C, which was recorded on December 13, 1934,” a MeT official said.
Due to the biting cold, the water bodies including parts of Dal Lake had frozen in the morning and the boatmen had a tough time while navigating through the frozen parts.
The taps in many areas of the city were also frozen and people burnt wood to unfreeze the taps.
Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded minus 7.2°C, which is the lowest December temperature since 1998. The all-time record stands at minus 9.4°C recorded on 31 December 1986.
The ski resort of Gulmarg recorded a low of -6.2°C while Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded a biting low of -8.6°C.
The night temperature settled in Qazigund, Kokernag, Pulwama, and Shopian in south Kashmir at -8.2°C, -5.8°C, -10.3 °C and 10.4°C respectively.
Over the last few weeks, the Kashmir valley has been recording sub-zero temperatures.
The 'Chillai-Kalan,' the 40 days known for its freezing weather and snow spells, began today.
It begins each year on December 21 and lasts until January 31.
Chillai-Kalan is a 40-day harshest winter period that will be followed by Chilla-bacha or baby cold from Feb 20 to March 2.
According to the MeT, the cold wave is expected to persist in isolated areas of Kashmir.
The MeT official said there is a possibility of a slight rise in minimum temp by 1-2°C during the next two days and thereafter again fall by 2-3°C till December 26.
The MeT has predicted light snowfall or rain is expected over higher reaches of Jammu-Kashmir, from Saturday night to the morning of Sunday.
“The light snow or rain is predicted to arrive on December 27 in the higher reaches of J&K,” the MeT official said.
