Srinagar residents serve free Iftar on roads

February 23, 2026 | BK News Service

Srinagar, Feb 22: In a touching display of unity and generosity, residents across Srinagar have stepped forward to organize free Iftar services along major roads, bridges, and marketplaces, ensuring that fasting individuals who are on their way home at sunset can break their fast on time during the holy month of Ramadan.

As the evening approaches and traffic begins to swell across the city, volunteers—mostly local youth, traders, and members of mohalla committees—gather at key junctions carrying dates, water bottles, fruit chaat, juice packs, and light snacks. Within moments of the Maghrib call to prayer, these volunteers begin distributing Iftar items to drivers, passengers, pedestrians, delivery workers, and daily wage laborers who are still commuting.
The initiative has gained momentum in several busy areas including commercial hubs and main connecting roads, where traffic congestion often delays commuters. Volunteers say the idea is simple yet meaningful: no fasting person should miss Iftar simply because they are stuck on the road.
“We understand how difficult it can be to be away from home at Iftar time,” said a young volunteer managing distribution at a roadside point. “Even a date and a sip of water is enough to open the fast. This is our small effort to serve humanity.”
Local shopkeepers and business owners have also extended their support by donating food items and financial assistance. In some neighborhoods, families prepare extra food at home and send it to roadside distribution points, turning the act into a collective community effort.
Elderly citizens have praised the initiative, calling it a revival of the traditional spirit of Ramadan that emphasizes compassion, charity, and care for others. Many commuters expressed gratitude, stating that such gestures reflect the strong social bonds and hospitality for which Srinagar is known.
Observers note that beyond just food distribution, the initiative symbolizes unity and shared responsibility. Volunteers are seen working together regardless of background, highlighting how Ramadan fosters a sense of togetherness and empathy within society.
As the holy month progresses, the number of distribution points continues to increase, with more localities joining the effort. The simple act of offering dates and water at sunset has transformed ordinary street corners into spaces of warmth and kindness, reinforcing the message that Ramadan is not only about fasting, but also about giving, sharing, and strengthening community ties.
With each passing evening, the city’s streets echo not only with the call to prayer but also with the spirit of generosity that defines Ramadan in Srinagar.
