Srinagar sizzles at 34.5°C as heatwave persists

Srinagar, July 10: The heat wave persisted across Kashmir on Friday with Srinagar recording a maximum temperature of 34.5 degrees Celsius, which was 4.8 degrees above normal.

According to data compiled by Kashmir Weather, Qazigund recorded a maximum temperature of 32.0°C, which was 4.1°C above normal, while Pahalgam settled at 28.0°C, 2.7°C above normal.
Kupwara recorded 33.0°C, 2.2°C above normal, while Kokernag registered 31.0°C, 3.4°C above normal. Tourist resort Gulmarg also witnessed unusual warmth, recording 24.9°C, which was 3.9°C above normal.
In the Jammu region, Jammu city recorded 34.5°C, marginally 0.2°C above normal. Banihal registered 29.9°C (1.3°C above normal), Batote recorded 27.2°C (0.5°C above normal), while Bhaderwah settled at 30.6°C (0.3°C above normal). Katra recorded 31.0°C, which remained 0.1°C below normal.
In the Union Territory of Ladakh, Leh recorded a maximum temperature of 23.4°C.
The Meteorological Department has, however, forecast intermittent rain and thundershowers over the coming days, with the possibility of heavy showers at isolated places from July 11, offering some relief from the prevailing heatwave conditions.
A Met official said on July 11-12, one or two spells of rain/thundershower are expected at many places with heavy rain/brief intense heavy showers at isolated places of Chenab valley, Pirpanjal range of Jammu region.
“On July 13-16, generally hot and humid weather with brief spell of rain/thundershower is expected at scattered places with brief intense showers at isol places of Jammu region,” he said.
The MeT official said on July 17-19, fresh spells of light to moderate Rain/thundershower are expected at many places.
The MeT has warned of possibility of heavy rainfall/brief intense heavy showers during 11-12th July at few places towards after noon hours and early morning/morning hours.
“There is possibility of flashfloods/ landslides/mudslides at few vulnerable places of Chenab Valley & PirPanjal Range,” it warned and cautioned people to stay away from nallas, streams and mudslide prone areas.
