Srinagarites throng Jhelum Riverfront and Zero Bridge to beat scorching heat

June 30, 2025 | Mohammad Danish

As temperatures continue to soar in the Kashmir Valley, residents of Srinagar are finding solace along the banks of the Jhelum River, particularly at the scenic Riverfront promenade and Zero Bridge, which have transformed into popular evening getaways for families and youth seeking relief from the oppressive summer heat.
With the mercury crossing 34°C in recent days and humidity levels adding to the discomfort, the city has seen a marked increase in people heading outdoors during the cooler evening hours. From children enjoying ice cream to couples taking riverside strolls, and elderly citizens soaking in the light breeze, the riverfront has turned into a vibrant social space.
The Jhelum Riverfront, developed as part of the Smart City project, features well-maintained walkways, sitting areas, cycling tracks, and green zones that offer both aesthetic charm and functional relaxation. Locals say the riverbank now provides a rare mix of urban calm and natural beauty in the heart of Srinagar.
"After staying indoors all day due to the heat, we come here every evening," said Farhat Ali, a resident of Rajbagh, sitting with his family at the riverfront park. "The breeze here is refreshing, and it’s the only place where children can play without feeling exhausted by the heat."
Zero Bridge, the iconic wooden structure that connects Rajbagh and Sonwar, has also become a hotspot during the evenings. Lined with food vendors and illuminated by soft decorative lights, the bridge now serves as both a heritage site and a community gathering point. Young people were seen taking selfies, sipping cold drinks, and enjoying live music from local buskers.
"Zero Bridge has become our favorite hangout spot in summers," said Mubeena Jan, a college student. "It's safe, beautiful, and gives us a chance to breathe after a long, hot day."
Local vendors selling lemon soda, ice cream, and fruit juices reported brisk business, with demand peaking between 6 PM and 9 PM. Some even called for designated night markets or weekend cultural activities at the riverfront to further enhance the area’s appeal.
Health authorities, meanwhile, have advised people to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity under direct sun. "The evening outings are a good idea as long as people take precautions against dehydration and sunburn during the day," said a doctor from SKIMS, Srinagar.
Officials from the Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL) said they are encouraged by the public response and will explore the possibility of adding cooling zones, mist sprayers, and mobile water kiosks during the high summer months.
As Kashmir experiences longer and hotter summers due to shifting climate patterns, the Jhelum Riverfront and Zero Bridge stand out not just as architectural or recreational landmarks, but as vital public spaces helping Srinagar residents cope with the heat—together.
