Srinagar, Jan 15: Senior Superintendent of Police at the Cyber Investigation Centre, Ramesh Gupta, on Thursday highlighted the importance of public awareness in preventing cyber frauds, emphasizing that timely reporting is crucial for recovering defrauded money.
Speaking on cyber safety, SSP Gupta said awareness is the first line of defence against cybercrime and urged caution while using digital platforms. He revealed that in 2025, over 18,000 cyber fraud complaints were reported nationwide, including numerous cases from Jammu and Kashmir.
In J&K alone, cyber frauds worth Rs 184.91 crore were reported, with Rs 32.64 crore successfully recovered, largely due to prompt reporting by victims. “Immediately reporting a fraud is critical, as delays make recovery difficult,” he said, advising the public to call helpline 1930 if they suspect fraud.
Gupta cautioned against downloading apps or clicking links from unknown sources and stressed safeguarding vital documents to prevent misuse or creation of mule accounts. He assured that cyber police are available to assist victims and encouraged people not to hesitate in reporting frauds.
He concluded that vigilance, awareness, and timely action can significantly reduce cybercrime and protect individuals from financial and personal loss.
