Street vendors cause chaos from Naaz cinema to Goni Khan

Public demands immediate action

June 26, 2025 | Mohmmad DANISH

A growing number of street vendors occupying the footpaths and parts of the road from Naaz Cinema to Goni Khan Market in the heart of Srinagar city has triggered chaos for both motorists and pedestrians. The stretch, once a crucial commuting corridor for shoppers and daily commuters, has now turned into a congested, chaotic zone, sparking public anger over official inaction.
Residents, local traders, and daily commuters have expressed deep frustration over the worsening situation, alleging that the authorities have failed to take any concrete steps to remove the illegal encroachments despite repeated complaints.
“The government seems to be in a slumber. From Naaz Cinema to Goni Khan, you can barely walk without getting pushed off the footpath. Street vendors have taken over every inch, and it’s a nightmare to drive through,” said Adil Ahmad, a local shopkeeper in the area.
Pedestrians, particularly women, elderly citizens, and children, find it increasingly difficult to navigate the stretch, often forced to walk on the main road due to blocked pavements. This has also led to frequent traffic jams and raised the risk of road accidents.
“Why are we being made to suffer every day just because there’s no enforcement of basic civic rules? This is not about livelihood, it's about balance. There has to be a proper space designated for vendors,” said Nayeema, a college student who uses the route daily.
Local shop owners have also voiced concern, claiming their businesses are being affected as customers avoid the area due to traffic congestion and overcrowding. “Not only are we losing business, but the street vendors are blocking the entrances to our shops. It’s unfair,” said a trader at Goni Khan Market.
Despite multiple representations made to the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and local administration, no significant action has been taken to reclaim public space. Many believe the vendors operate under the patronage of political or influential figures, which hinders strict enforcement.
Civic activists have called for a long-term plan, including identifying designated vending zones and enforcing anti-encroachment drives in high-traffic areas. “The smart city tag is meaningless if basic urban order is not maintained,” said a member of a local civil society group.
The public has now urged the Lieutenant Governor's administration and Srinagar Municipal Corporation to immediately intervene and restore pedestrian and traffic order on this busy commercial stretch before the situation worsens further.
