As winter approaches, the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir is a focal point of terrorists which calls for heightened security and increased surveillance. According to officials, the Border Security Force has intensified vigil to counter potential infiltration attempts from across the border. The recent statement by Additional Director General of BSF, Satish S Khandare, underscores that terrorist groups exploit the seasonal transition to push infiltrators into the Union territory before snow-covered passes that surround Jammu and Kashmir become impassable. It is an annual challenge which has been met with unwavering alertness, advanced technology and strategic coordination in the past also but chinks have already remained. The LoC, which stretches over 700 kilometers through rugged terrain, has been a hotspot for cross-border infiltration since 1989 when terrorism started emanating from Pakistan. Recent intelligence reports indicate that terrorists are waiting at launch pads across the border which poses a persistent threat. Winter, with its harsh weather and reduced visibility, provides a tactical advantage to Pakistan-backed infiltrators who will attempt to exploit gaps in surveillance. The BSF’s decision to heighten vigilance is hence not merely a precautionary measure but a strategic necessity to thwart attempts to destabilize J&K. At this time of the year, jawans need to show increased alertness and show their resolve to protect our borders against those seeking to disrupt peace. Terrorists will make desperate attempts to infiltrate before winter fully sets in. Then their modus operandi is to fuel unrest, supply resources to local networks or establish sleeper cells. A proactive stance, backed by intelligence-driven operations, is the need of the hour to neutralize these threats. However, vigilance alone is not enough. Security forces need to integrate advanced surveillance technologies such as drones, thermal imaging, and motion sensors with the boots on the ground to enhance real-time monitoring and enabling rapid response to suspicious movements along the LoC. Moreover, coordination between the BSF, the Army, and local police is equally important. A robust defense network should spearhead joint operations, intelligence sharing and community engagement. The local population which lives in border areas are often the first to notice unusual activity. They should be encouraged and incentivised to act as the eyes and ears of security forces. Building trust with communities while maintaining operational secrecy is a delicate but necessary balance. As winter looms, the alertness of security forces will serve as a defiant answer to those who seek to undermine peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
