Sunday market draws huge crowds

August 10, 2026 | Shugufta Rashid

Srinagar, Aug 9: Srinagar’s Sunday market witnessed a huge rush of shoppers on Sunday, with large crowds turning up to explore a wide range of goods offered by roadside vendors and small traders.

The market, known for offering products at comparatively affordable prices, remained bustling throughout the day as residents from different parts of the city and adjoining areas arrived for shopping.
From clothing, footwear and household items to accessories, toys and other everyday products, vendors displayed a variety of goods to attract customers. The affordable prices remained one of the major attractions for shoppers, particularly families looking for budget-friendly purchases.
The heavy footfall led to increased activity across the market, with shoppers moving between stalls and vendors attending to customers. Several stretches also witnessed congestion as pedestrians and vehicles competed for space.
Shopkeepers and street vendors said Sundays generally bring a significant increase in customers, providing them an important opportunity to boost their weekly sales.
For many residents, the Sunday market has become more than just a shopping destination, offering an informal and lively atmosphere where people can browse through a variety of products without spending heavily.
However, the large gathering also highlighted the need for better crowd management, sanitation and traffic regulation in areas surrounding the market. Residents and traders said adequate arrangements would help ensure smoother movement and a more convenient shopping experience.
The strong turnout once again underlined the popularity of Srinagar’s traditional Sunday market and its importance to small traders and consumers seeking affordable goods.
