Surviving Winter

November 20, 2024 | Farooq Ahmad Lone

As we all know that nowadays in Kashmir we have to be full of warm clothes and good heating arrangements in our homes to face the harsh cold of winter. The constant decrease in temperatures day and night impacts us a lot forcing us to take measures right from changing clothes of our body to the setting up of curtains of the room. The cold more severely affects children, old men and sick persons who all need care and protection from their guardians and family members. True it is that we cannot interfere in the climate to remove winter from the list of seasons but we can take steps to mitigate the severe effects of winter by keeping our bodies and homes warm and clean.

We also share a moral responsibility to help the poor people to facilitate heating devices as well as warm clothes for them so that they can save themselves too from the low temperatures of winter. In winter first of all we need to wear thick warm clothes to keep our body warm and covered. This will enable us to remain warm even outside our homes and workplaces. We have to avoid using cold water in winter as much as possible and get adapted to use of warm and hot water. Arrangements of hot and clean water must be made both in our homes and workplaces. We can also use hot drinking water in winter during meals to keep the inner part of our body warm.
While we are in our homes or workplaces we can use heating devices like heater, heat blower, A.C. etc. to keep the room warm and automatically warm ourselves as heat is a form of energy which gets transferred from high temperature to low temperature. If we lack these services which run on electricity due to power cuts which is a big problem in winter in Kashmir, we can use thick blankets anytime to keep ourselves warm. We can also use the traditional heating item called Kangri which is also easy to carry from one place to another keeping us warm all the time. The more we remain inside in our homes in winter, the warmer we will be and the better we will be. We should not unnecessarily remain out of our houses for hours during winter as there is enough cold air outside which can cause various ailments like cough, cold etc.
Family members can spent hours together in a single room like kitchen instead of staying in different rooms which will led to more warming in the room as most of the heat gets transferred from one person to person instead of losing in the open air of the room. Those who have studies thermodynamics can better understand this technical sentence. On the days without clouds we can get exposure to sunlight even though it is weak and less intense but still sunlight is an electromagnetic wave which produces heating effect thus warming our bodies at a free cost. This opportunity can be availed along with charging solar lights on sunlight. Keeping ourselves clean and neat is also important as if dirt is attached to clothes and body it can prevent heat entering the body. Taking regular bath in winter is thus necessary. Moreover we can also approach to doctors to get some tips on how to be healthy and warm in winter.
