Teaching at Elementary Level

March 16, 2026 | Malik Manzoor

Teaching elementary students is not everybody’s cup of tea. It requires patience and perseverance. A child does not like harsh or sluggish approaches to teaching. He loves activities and fun. He enjoys involvement and participation. He wants to do things according to his mood and choice. He is energetic and often naughty. Therefore, he learns better through active pedagogy and play-way methods.

You cannot simply narrate or demonstrate a lesson to him. Instead, you have to involve him in the learning process and demonstrate concepts through his participation. Before doing so, however, you must motivate him through a series of usual as well as unusual actions. Your lesson plan should be clear in your mind rather than merely written in a diary. You must channelise their immense energy through physical as well as mental activities.
Their attention span is very short, so your plan must include many energizers and unique activities. There should be two or three activities within a single lesson. There should also be a democratic atmosphere in the classroom where a child can ask anything freely and without hesitation.
How is this possible?
It is possible through good teachers who can develop a strong rapport with their students. A teacher who is cheerful, gentle, and willing to play with students can make this possible. On the other hand, a teacher who is extremely rigid and strict in approach may find it difficult to teach elementary students effectively.
Can female teachers then do justice to this responsibility?
It is often believed that only female teachers can do so. However, in my opinion, this belief is not entirely justified. Women too can lose their temper; they can also be emotional and sometimes biased. They love their own children deeply, but that does not automatically mean they will show the same affection to all children. Yes, compared to men, they may generally be softer-hearted, but that alone is not sufficient to deal with the naughtiness of young learners. Children at elementary level love sweetness and encouragement. They can't learn in a strict and rigid atmosphere . Fear of punishment destroys their natural learning ability and capacity. Sitting on the chair and issuing orders is a psychologically unsound and unjustified approach.
Nevertheless, there is a small group of both male and female teachers who are truly capable of teaching primary classes effectively. Such teachers should be identified and deployed in primary schools so that newly admitted children can grow educationally to their fullest potential . It is because children love singing and dancing. They like talking more and listening less. They prefer running over sitting and jumping over standing. They love enjoyment and recreation. So, an elementary level teacher has to be flexible and creative ,patient and compassionate, resilient and energetic, technologically proficient ,trained and equipped with verbal and non verbal skills. In simple words a combo of innovation and fun.
It is extremely important to nurture primary classes with great care. Strong foundations at the elementary level can bring success and excellence at the middle, secondary, and higher secondary levels. Therefore, if we truly want to revolutionise our education system, we must focus on the primary level and strengthen it.
