A terrorist was killed in an overnight gunfight with security forces at Lolab in border district of Kupwara.
A security official said acting on credible inputs regarding the presence of terrorists in Lolab forests, a joint operation by Army and police launched a joint search operation in the area yesterday evening.
“As the forces zeroed in on the suspected spot, an exchange of fire took place between the hiding terrorists and the search party. There was a gunfight and in the ensuing firefight, a terrorist was killed,” he said.
The identity of the slain terrorist was being ascertained.
It was the second gunfight in north Kashmir in 24 hours.
Earlier, an encounter broke out between terrorists and security personnel in Ketsen area of Bandipora district yesterday evening.
During the encounter, a terrorist was killed and two security personnel injured.
“A M4 rifle was recovered from the slain terrorist,” a security official said.
He said the anti-militancy operation was called off after the killing of the terrorist.
