His wife, niece injured in attack
An ex-serviceman was shot dead and his wife and niece injured by terrorists in a targeted attack in Jammu Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Monday.
Police sources said terrorists barged into the house of ex-army man Manzoor Ahmed Wagay in the Behibagh area of Kupwara in the afternoon and opened fire on the inmates.
In the terrorist firing, Wagay, his wife Aina Akhtar and niece Saina Hameed, 13, daughter of Habibullah Shah, sustained bullet injuries, they said.
The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital, where ex-serviceman Wagay succumbed to his injuries.
The doctors said he had sustained critical bullet injuries in abdomen and succumbed to injuries in the hospital.
Wagay’s wife and relative are undergoing treatment at GM Anantnag, where doctors have termed their condition as stable.
According to doctors, Wagay’s wife had bullet injuries in the thigh and his niece sustained injuries in the hand.
Soon after the incident security forces cordoned off the area and launched a manhunt to track down the terrorist responsible for the attack.
It was the first targeted attack carried out by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir in 2025.
Manzoor's younger brother said that he (Manzoor) had retired in 2021 and was rearing sheep now.
He said Manzoor had four daughters and a son and was the sole breadwinner for the family.
"Our only demand is justice and nothing else… He was running his own business," he added.
Pall of gloom descended on the entire village when the body of Manzoor’s was brought to his home.
The villagers, including men and women, gathered at Manzoor’s house to express solidarity with the bereaved family. Some women were wailing and beating their chest to mourn the killing of Manzoor.
