The Disease of Ego

The first reason is wealth and riches. Intoxicated by wealth, a person feels that he is superior to everyone. He believes he can buy anything with his money. Blessed with splendid clothes, tall buildings, and delicious dishes, a rich man falls victim to the poverty of ego

Ego is a disease that is a fundamental cause of ruin. Almost everyone in the world is a worshipper and victim of ego. There are a rare few who live above their ego. However, even they inevitably fall prey to ego at some point or another. Sometimes, in the very efforts to rid oneself of ego, a person sinks deeper into it. In short, a person can never truly escape the net of ego. The more one tries to escape, the more entangled one becomes. But the question arises: why is man a worshipper of ego? It is evident that ego, besides being a disease, is also a major sin. So why does man chase after it like a madman and push his life towards destruction? Some reasons are mentioned in the coming lines. Additionally, its various harms are also briefly discussed.

The first reason is wealth and riches. Intoxicated by wealth, a person feels that he is superior to everyone. He believes he can buy anything with his money. Blessed with splendid clothes, tall buildings, and delicious dishes, a rich man falls victim to the poverty of ego. A line of cars and a healthy body prevent this person from seeing the valley of humility, the effect of which manifests as considering oneself better than others. An abundance of money alienates a person from everything except the lust for ego, which remains with him every moment. The second reason is ideological superiority. This kind of thinking prevents one from accepting contradictory views, the direct effect of which is that an egotistical person excludes those who disagree with his ideas from the very circle of humanity. A person with such a specific mind-set becomes an easy victim of ego, and thus begins an unending long chain of egotism where ideologies win in the form of ego. The third reason is religious narrow-mindedness. This perspective has also watered the tree of ego considerably. A person who considers himself very pious finds his ego inflated and becomes a patient of ego. In this state, even the true and firm words of others become hard to swallow, and gradually, the person enters the terrifying valleys of unbridled egotism. By declaring his own religion correct and others' religions wrong, a person also becomes a worshipper of his ego. His delusion is that he believes only his thoughts and beliefs are correct. The fourth reason is ignorance. There's no complaint against the uneducated; it's natural for these poor souls to be ignorant. But it's a pity for those who, despite knowing, choose to remain ignorant. Those who possess the blessings of knowledge and authority yet are galloping in the race of ego derive no benefit from their knowledge. They should seek the company of teachers again. The fifth reason is the education system. If the education system fails to bring about a revolution in a person's inner life, the direct consequence will be that a person gets trapped in the thorny bushes of ego, from which it is very difficult to free oneself. The purpose of knowledge is to keep man away from the filth found within himself. To guide those desires onto the right path which fuel his ego. To give a positive colour to those thoughts which are engaged in weighing him down every moment. But the opposite happens. The obsession with the race to get ahead, which has taken over our education system, has set every child on the path of ego. Every child wants to leave others behind and get ahead, and for everyone to shower them with flowers of praise. This is the most sinister form of ego. When even children start becoming patients of ego, then may God protect that nation or country.
Now let's talk about the harms of ego. Its first harm is that a person descends below the pedestal of humanity and starts being counted among animals. A person who becomes addicted only to "I" ceases to see anything else. All his actions and behaviour revolve around this field, and ultimately, this very egoistic 'I' pushes him into the mouth of ruin. The second harm is the loss of the ability to distinguish between genuine and fake. A patient of ego can never make a just decision between different things. Whenever he hears the ultimate truth, his false 'I' stops him from accepting the truth. Thus, this person, living in his self-created false world, becomes a source of trouble for himself and for others. His presence never brings a message of joy to other humans. Only praises for himself come out of his mouth. In front of him, all other humans are merely human-shaped animals. Only he is brimming with intellect and is the shopkeeper of pearls of knowledge. The third harm is distance from true knowledge. A person who has become accustomed to ego can never become acquainted with true knowledge. This person will only see his own knowledge as complete and free from error. But this very belief is his greatest flaw. Had he evaluated his knowledge, he would never have considered his knowledge complete. But his devilish arrogance plays a fundamental role in making him look down upon others' knowledge, and he ends up facing disgrace. The fourth harm is the displeasure of God. Allah despises egotistical people. In Allah's eyes, those people hold high positions who are miles away from arrogance but are complete embodiments of softness and refinement. Their eyes see with God's light. Their living and dying are according to Allah's will, so there is no room for arrogance or "I" in them.
A person should strive to become a lover of humanity and a worshipper of God instead of becoming an egotist. There is no reliance to be placed on this mortal life. Therefore, it is better for everyone to abandon egotism and adopt humility, modesty, and compassion as their way of life. More than half of the tangled issues in the world could be solved if people showed the disease of ego to an expert physician. Furthermore, one should frequent an environment where lessons in humility and love for humanity are taught. Moreover, full efforts should be made to stay away from egotism, from educational institutions to religious places. The most essential step that can be taken in this regard is for a person to start living from within himself. Life will become easier, and the possibilities of the serious disease of ego being eliminated will increase.
