Al-Isra(the night journey) Wa Al-Miraj(the Ascension) is one of the most stupendous & marvellous events & occurrences in Islamic history, unfurled during a period of extreme strife & melancholy in the life of our beloved Prophet (PBUH),often referred to as Aam Al-Huzn (The year of sorrows).The same year marked the demise of two of the Prophet's most beloved supporters: His uncle Abu Talib, who had been his custodian & his beloved wife Hazrat Khadija(Ra) who showed her unwavering support & emotional strength to him when he was rebuffed almost by all. During this period of extreme strife & melancholy, beloved Prophet (PBUH) was blessed by Allah(SWT) with the divine journey of Al-Isra Wa Al-Miraj.

The whole event took place in a single night(27th Rajab of Islamic calendar) ,where the Prophet (PBUH) was taken from Masjid Al-Haram in Mecca to Masjid Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem. There onwards he ascended through the seven skies, observing divers signs of Allah, meeting various Prophets & eventually reaching the divine presence of Allah(Swt).During this important & great journey, alongside observing Jannah (Paradise) & Jahanam (Hell),Prophet(PBUH) was also shown the tortures & torments of different sins. Writing the few of them here with the aim, we would try to save ourselves & guide others to stay way from these sins.
Abu Huraira reported Allah's messenger as saying," on the night when I was taken up to heaven I came across a group of people whose bellies were like houses filled with snakes that could be seen from outside their bellies. I asked Jibrail who they were? he replied, they were the people who were practicing usury (Mishkat:2828)
Anas ibn Mālik reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said: "During my ascent to heaven, I came across by a group of people with copper nails scratching their faces and chests. I asked: 'O Jibrīl, who are these?' He replied: 'These are the ones who eat the flesh of people (by backbiting) and slander them.'"(Abu Dawood:4878)
Then the Prophet (PBUH) saw a group of people whose heads being smashed again & again. Every time their heads crushed, they amazingly returned to their original state, only for the torture to begin a new, in an unending cycle without delay. Prophet (PBUH) asked Jibrail, Who are these people? He replied, These are the people whose heads were too heavy to get up & perform salat(Prayer).(Majma ul Zawaid:235).
The Prophet (PBUH) said about his journey of Miraj: I passed by a group of people who had in front of them freshly roasted meat in a pot on one side and very unpleasant (bad-smelling) meat on the other side. They would eat from the foul meat & not touch the good meat. I asked: O Jibrail! Who are these people? He said: These are the people from your Ummah(community) who had an excellent, lawful (pure) wife at home and they would go & have sexual intercourse with a wicked woman and sleep with her until morning.(Al-Isra Wa al-Miraj by Syed Muhammad Farhan).
The Prophet(PBUH) then saw people whose tongues and lips were being sliced repeatedly with sharp metal knives. Each time the cuts were made, their tongues and lips would return to their original state, only to be sliced again unending cycle of agony. Prophet (PBUH): What is this, O Jibril! He said : these are the public speakers of division in your Community: they say what they do not do. (Musnad ahmad:12235).
Lastly, Narrated By Ibn Abbas: The Prophet said: “I was shown the Hell-fire and that the majority of its dwellers were women who were ungrateful.” It was asked, “Do they disbelieve in Allah?” (or are they ungrateful to Allah?) He replied, “They are ungrateful to their husbands and are ungrateful for the Favors and the good (charitable deeds) done to them.(Sahih Bukhari:28)
